Bowflex

Me personally i would not get one. Just got the fact that they are a little over the top on the price. I would rather get myself a nice set or 2 of dumbells and work with that. But i cant afford either so i gotta go to the gym with my folks. My friend has one and he said he is happy with it :).

the commercials are very misleading, they tell you something stupid like 20 minutes a day 4 days a week, but in small print its like with cardio of 6 hours a week or something, its also quite exspensive...

I have never actually worked out with one, but I had the opportunity to try one out.

Some people report good results with it, but personally I didn't like it. The reason I didn't like it is that the resistance it offers is uneven, easier at the beginning of the rep, harder towards the end. The difference in resistance is very noticeable. The reps are either way too easy at the beginning, and ok towards the end, or ok towards the beginning but so hard towards the end that it is nearly impossible to finish the rep.

My friend has one.

Overall it is a solid machine. Separate pulleys for each arm mimicks dumbells. The weights are not perceivably as heavy as free weights so don't think your 300 lb bench press will get you the same ability in the gym. Weight at the extremes of the range of motion are not evenly distributed (start of the contraction) but it does simulate what a cable machine lets you achieve - weight tension along the range of motion; except for the very beginning.

It isn't as easy for doing Circuit training since you have to adjust the position of the chair or remove the backboard.

The cost is high but in DC there are a lot of people selling them for 1/3 of what the company sells it for. I have considered getting one since I cannot work legs or my chest as well on my Total trainer (leg extension/leg curls / cable flies- like the gym).
