Body Fat Scales

Are Body Fat Scales (such as this one ) a major rip off or are they good to use. Cuz I know GNC sells one. Comments.

I know the Calipers would probably work to its just that i cant get around to getting one of those right now. Cuz I need to make sure I'm losing fat and not muscle.

No man, I wouldnt buy one of them.
They seem to miss the target more and more with the muscle you build.

I was 170lbs and had no muscle and it siad I was 20%, which was a bit under, then a year later, I was 140, has much more muscle and it said 25%.

This is with 2 diff types. I'd go with calipers.

Major rip off? No. Accurate? Not exactly.

They use electric bio-impedance to see how well your body carries an electric current.
The key to using them is to be well hydrated. That means you can't weigh-in in the morning because you've dehydrated overnight.

They recommend you weigh-in late afternoon. By that time, you're carrying 2-3 lbs of food in your stomach/intestines...so the bodyfat might be more accurate, but now your weight is skewed a little.

That said, used properly, they can help you see trends in fat loss/fat gains, but you have to take the readings with a grain of salt.
I've been able to fluctuate on my scale 4.5% between a.m. and p.m. on the same day.

Better to get skinfold calipers, a $5 'how to use them' book (if they don't come with such a thing...or find a website with instructions). Yo ucan get a good pair for $10 online, and they'll be a lot more accurate.

if you go to a gym see if they can test bodyfat for you. some charge a nominal fee, others do it free.

are there any stores like GNC where I can get the calipers? cuz I cant get them online (dont have an credit or debit card). and i dont know if the golds i work out has one of those calipers neither.

Do you guys suggest against a digital caliper? Or are they just as accurate as a manual caliper? I only ask because at first glance it looks as tho the manual ones would leave more room for human error.

You sure you cant do a mail order. You may have to call them up rather than order over the internet, but you can send a cheque.

you know that calipers are not easy to use, you have to be trained and you cant do your self.

Yup, you have to have practice with the calipers in order to be able to use them accurately. In fact, when getting your bodyfat tested with calipers, assuming the individual knows what they are doing, you should use teh same person each time or you might get a different reading even in the same day.

The electrical ones are inaccurate up to 8% and that's a huge margin of error. I've had myself as far off as 6% within a couple of hours. My lifting partner, Jonesy, couldn't even get a bodyfat reading off of it and he's carrying around 7%.

Ok so if manual is the one I'm suposed to use I'll try to get a mail order for them can you give me the number for contact (sry if I'm asking to much) and if I do the mail order how much will it be and for that matter what is the proper way to use them.

just google around for 'skin fold calipers' and find a site with the right price, call em and see what you can do.

also, you can NOT skin fold caliper yourself. someone else HAS to test you, and honestly its best done in short shorts or underwear, no shirt.

although i do believ in the whole stop counting thing i feel that i should get the BF clippers so i dont fall below the healthy BF level
