Okay, time to start trying this journal bidness. :)

I'm 27 soon to be 28, 6'3" and 294 lbs. I was at 301 about a month ago. I've been wanting to lose weight for a long, long time now, but am finally getting serious about. Mostly because my wife is trying to lose along with me and it's a lot easier to stay focused together.

When we first met I was around 220, I had some extra padding on me, but not like this. I look at old pictures of us (as I'm sure she does, too) and really wish I could be that guy again (preferably better ;-) ).

But the main thing is looking at pictures of me with my kids and seeing just how huge I am now. It's all too reminiscent of pictures of my father when I was knee high to a grasshopper. He was really rather heavy and didn't end up losing that excess weight until he had to have quintuple bypass surgery when I was 16. I remember how worried my mother and I were. I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT want my wife and kids to go through that, let alone have to bury me before I get to see my kids grow up, get married, etc. I'm terrified of it.

Before my wife and I met, I was in marching band in college (no band camp, band nerd, etc jokes ;-) I've heard them all). Now, it wasn't track and field, mind you, but it was fairly strenuous activity for 1.5 hours a day, every day, during the week, and then pretty much all day on game days. I could eat anything and never gain a pound. Then football season ended. Oops, the domino's pizza every night for dinner didn't work quite the same as it had. Freshman 15 was more like 50.

So I'm finally knuckling down and getting to work on this. My main focus right now is really exercise, as I've lived a very sedentary life while I've gained all this weight. I'm jogging MWF and doing a cardio tape of some sort on TThSa. I've got a buddy that jogs with me, a former marine, that's really keeping me on track. We're doing intervals of jogging/walking 2min/2min 10 reps each for right now. Once I finish out this week, we're gonna change up the intervals.

The jogging is getting a lot better. I find my lung capacity is getting better and I'm able to carry on a conversation during the first few reps. My legs still feel really heavy, but not as bad as the first night (which was only a week ago). Last night we were on the ninth rep of jogging and he pushed me to jog out that rep until we reached his house, which put me at the 3:20 mark instead of 2:00. I was wiped, but proud of myself for pushing it there.

As far as diet, I'm just trying to take baby steps to start out. I don't want to start out as the diet nazi just to have my wife find me under a mountain of Cheeto's bags and Hoho wrappers in a month. So I'm really just working on portion control for the time being. One of the hardest things for me is to push away from the table when there is still food there. I'll eat until it's gone, and then feel sick later. I'm working on stopping where I know I should and letting it settle. Once I can get that monster back in it's cage, I'll work on cutting some of the crap out of my diet. My big vice is salty snacks. I love potato chips, fries, pub mix, etc, but have never been able to substitute anything for them. Veggies never work for me because I can't stand raw carrots etc without about a gallon of ranch to dip them in. I like sweets, but have a much easier time resisting them then the salty stuff.

So far everything seems to be working really well. I'm losing about a pound a day, give or take. I expected about as much to start with though. My feeling is that with all this excess weight, my body will be quite happy to expunge it at first. Once I lose the first bit though, it's gonna get hard. But, knowing is half the battle right? (GO JOE).

Baked chips actually taste pretty good. Not the fat-free Olestra chips - (in whichever flavor you like best, of course). I make my own dip out of fat-free sour cream (which is essentially skim milk and gelatin) and onion soup mix, which is also a pretty good veggie dip. Baked corn chips + salsa. Fat-free cheddar microwaved for a minute on a piece of parchment paper (not wax paper - my walmart carries parchment paper in the wedding cake section back in crafts) then let to sit for 30 seconds makes a nice chewy crunchy salty snack. 94% popcorn (although for not many calories more, Pop Secret Light Butter Premium is supposed to have better flavor). McCain 5-Minute Fries are supposed to be really good, but I've never tried them.

Thanks for the tips allyphoe! Have to try working some of that in. They all sound easy, too, which is a must since I don't have much time to prep things before I head off to work.

I looooove baked chips.

Good for you for getting on the "healthier lifestyle" wagon. When I first started I could barely run for a minute non stop, now I can almost run a mile (about 10 minutes for me) without taking a break! I used to be a smoker so it is fantastic to feel the difference in the lung capacity.

You may hit a plateau after the initial pounds come off but just stick with it and you will get to where you want to be!

Thanks for the words of encouragement, dawn. Yeah it's great to already feel the difference from running. The first night I had to stop after 8 reps, now I can make the full 10. I really hope to soon be able to run the full 20 minutes straight through. Never thought I'd get into exercising (except lifting). I'm gonna have to get a second washing machine for all the sweaty workout clothes on top of my daily work clothes. :)

Hi Bodiddlie! It sounds like you're doing a great job -- portion control really is the hardest thing isn't it?

I have a question for you if you will indulge a stupid foreigner for a moment: wtf is a twinkie? I think it's kind of a sponge finger, but what's delicious about that? Seriously, this has been bothering me for years. Americans are always eating twinkies in books, but they never explain their appeal.

Ah the twinkie. One of the true mysteries of the modern world. Yellow sponge cake with a creamy filling. The only thing other than cockroaches guaranteed to survive a nuclear holocaust. Honestly, I've never been a huge twinkie fan, but they are somewhat synonomous with poor diet, so I thought it made for a funny and catchy title. :) I have an odd sense of humor that way, especially when I write.

BTW Pancake, yes portion control is quite difficult. I picked the kids up at my in-laws last night since wifey was at school. They had some beef stew there which was really quite good. I kept wanting to go get more, but had to resist. I finally had to just leave to keep from eating more.

Did an hour workout video last night. Not quite as strenuous as the jogging, but it definitely kept my heart rate up. Jogging tonight.

Oh, and off topic for the moment, but for anyone who hasn't seen it, go rent "The Bucket List." Jack Nicholson, Morgan Freeman. How can you go wrong? Great little movie. Just watched it last night.

Jogged last night. Made it through 6 reps of 2 minutes before starting to feel tired. I could carry on a conversation with my running buddy! We're gonna start doing a 4 minute rep first and the back to 2 on 2 off for the rest of the run.

Made some tilapia on the grill last night. I got a plank of cedar and some lime & cilantro seasoning. Wow, really good. I've always loved seafood, but never realized how healthy some of the white fishes are. A couple of ounces of tilapia had very little calories and almost no fat, but great protein. And it tasted fantastic! Gives me much hope for the future. Looks like there's gonna be a lot of seafood in our diet. :)

Wife has class again tonight. Gotta figure out what to do about dinner.

It's been a while since I updated so here's the scoop:

Jogging is going swimmingly! Last night we did 6 reps of 4 minutes with 2 minutes walk in between. Hoping to kick it up to 6 mins late next week. I'm down to 290.2 now. It was as low as 289.6 on Sunday morning, but I think Sunday didn't go as well. I kept munching on tortilla chips throughout the day. Gonna pick up some dumbbells tonight so I can start a little bit of strength training as well.

Diet is going pretty well. I quit buying soda and have switched to baked chips. I'm limiting my portions pretty well and trying to have some healthy snacks between meals. Hopefully I can stick with it!
