Blocked Sinuses

Hi guys, I had a cold for a few weeks leaving me feeling totally blocked up. My nose and stuff is fine now but my ears are still blocked and i have some ringing in the left one, psychically i feel fine but i am apprehensive about going back into the gym. Should i wait for it to clear completely, could it do me any further damage?

I personally would hit the gym. The best thing I have found for blocked ears (I suffer from swimmers ear around 3x a year) Is to get some eucalyptus oil and a lemon, Put a cup of water in a pot and the oil and lemon. Let it come to the boil then put a towel over your head and the pot and inhale and let the steam drift over you.

make sure the steam isnt too hot and dont get too close to the pot. Also make sure the towel doesnt rest on the element!

Ringing in the ear suggests hearing damage. I would see a doctor.

It's always good to hit the gym. However, just don't lift heavy or anything as you're sick and might not be 100%.

My cousin has ringing in his ears because they are damage due to exposure to sustained noise.

I would look into it before long as Dallen said...it appears they could be damaged.

Good luck

Go to Wally-World and buy a Nasal Rinse Kit $12. Use it a couple times a day to start, then once a day ongoing. You will be amazed!! :)

Get the rinse kit like suggested. I have sinus issues year round and it's the only cure. You'll get addicted to Afrin and the sort and it really clears me out be for workout. Internet as well "Neli Med" or something like that.

nasal rinse

I recommend

netipot.org

Get neti wash and salt with it. It always helped me but I noticed an even bigger difference when I started using the neti wash with zinc. I've had terrible nasal allergies all my life. I used to literally get at least 10 sinus infections a year...now I haven't had one since I started using the zinc

Get their salt too...it makes a big difference because it has no impurities....or at least get pickling/canning salt.

If there is a Whole Foods by you they usually carry neti pots then you won't have to pay shipping

Gooch,

Whats the zinc additive provide in the nasal rinse? I just have the normal packets of salt/propriety blended stuff. Curious because I'm nearly always in some state of sinus infection like it sounds like you were formerly.

Thx,

MG

This is what the website says

"Zinc helps to tone and astringe the nasal passages reducing excess mucus and promoting clear, healthy sinuses. Studies show that Zinc reduces the duration and symptoms of the common cold, slowing the replication of rhinoviruses which typically cause colds."

It doesn't really mention sinus infections directly, but it worked for me...like night and day. You still use the salt, but this is a liquid you add in to the mixture with a dropper

Ephedrine is regulated in WA cause all the junkies use it to cook meth with. Big problem here in Kitsap. You don't need an Rx for it just have to show ID and can only get 3 boxes or so at a time. I prefer the rinse, no side-effects like the pills give you, dry mouth problems sleeping etc.

"Oh Canada"

Is anything illegal up here in Canada, limestix? We must have the laxest laws on the planet :D

Yea, it's nice not to be regulated into the ground all the time.

I guess if you use a lot there are side effects. 8mg is enough to give me a runny nose though, and I don't feel anything else from only 8.

That's fine if you just get an occasional cold. If you have a chronic condition the problem with using stimulants to open your sinuses is that they not only stop working after using them for a while but they quite often will cause a rebound effect where you're worse than when you started using them.

That happens even with Afrin

Yeah, you're working on four weeks with blocked sinuses... if it lasts much longer it's time for a trip to the doc. Most colds don't last any longer than 4-6 weeks, and along those lines, full sinus blockage for that kind of extended period of time is less common.

As to whether or not you think you can get back to the gym, this is really up to you, but there are a couple things to consider. If you're still having the occasional fever, you are very likely still contagious, and it's not fair to other gym-goers to expose them to your illness. Outside of that, it's really up to you, and how well you feel. You should weigh any soreness or weakness caused by your cold against your workout, but also remember that physical exhaustion can work against you in recovery.
