Birdcage is getting fit again

Hey hey all, Birdcage here. I have finally decided to lose some weight - since I injured my leg, I've put on too much weight, and gotten too unfit. After a couple of years of milling around, getting more overweight, and less likely to get back into rugby. I've decided that I want to be fit again by my this time next year - and by fit, I mean being able to run every day for three miles, like I could when I was 16.

I am 19, English, and a student. Last year, I injured my leg pretty horribly - fell in a pond, and punctured my shin, which led to tetanus, which was left for 2 weeks by a very incompetent doctor, which resulted in me having a lot of tissue removed from my right shin. Because of this, I've had to stop doing sports all together.

Right now, I want to get back into sport - rugby, maybe football. For the past few months, I've been doing some mild cardio to keep myself somewhat in shape, but not enough to stave off gaining weight. I actually weigh less than I did before...but I had a six-pack and biceps back then. Now it's just a belly, heh.

At 6 foot 1, I currently weigh 250lbs - not majorly overweight, but too much. I want to go down to 210lbs, and then hopefully build it back up with muscle after that. To facilitate this, I am having weekly physiotherapy sessions, calorie counting, and exercise three times a week - starting at 2 mile walks.

My biggest problem will be giving up Dr. Pepper, heh. That's stuff's way too tasty.

So, if you're still with me after this wall of text, thank you for reading, and feel free to heckle, or maybe even support me! Any nice words would be awesome, but I'm man enough to be told off by more experienced people, hehe. I was gonna post a before picture, but I figured that none of you want to see a hairy, pudgy stomach - maybe an after sometime?

Hey Birdcage,
Just wanted to say hi and welcome :hurray:. Hope you continue to post regularly. This forum is great because there are so many encouraging like-minded people.

Also btw, we don't mind seeing the b4 pic. :p.
Take care and all the best on your fitness journey :seeya:

Good luck man.

It's weirder for men to try and lose weight. We're supposed to not care about that stuff :D

Well, that sucked balls. My computer decided to melt, along with my college work. Now that I'm about to finish school, I will have to update this...will update my first post tonight

Well, first post updated. Once I can get some weights, I'll do some before and after pictures...maybe.

Welcome back, how has your weight changed over your break away from the forum ?

Hi, Welcome back.

Interesting first post. It should be a lively thread if you keep it up.

That tetanus experience sounds truly horrid. I thought people often died from that. You did well to avoid that conclusion.

My father's your height. He's also broad and used to look nice around 14 - 15 stone. He used to be a rower so he was a sporty man in his day.

Luckily for me, mine was local - the toxin hadn't spread throughout my body before it was caught. A big chunk of flesh removed, and three weeks on 16 pills a day finished it before it had the chance to get worse.

The university I'm going to in September has an awesome gym, I found out today, and a "fun" rugby team, as well as the two serious ones - there's some more incentive for me to get into shape - I didn't think I'd be fit enough in time to play in September.

Eaten 600 kcals so far, with dinner to go...looks like I'll be allowed a snack this evening while I'm homeworking.

Also, a week until my birthday!

Another quick update - weights reserved, to be picked up tomorrow. With those in hand, I think I'll do some before pictures, as I'll lose weight quicker as I put on some muscle again.

Gah! Happy!

Maybe I'll get my biceps back someday!

Don't you think you should try to skip the crisps and eat some real food. Make yourself eat a salad sandwich or something like that - you something with some nutrition in it.

Don't forget if you want your body to heal and be strong, it will need things which are not available in crisps things like protein and vitamins and calcium. Drink milk! Lots of it for your bones. ok don't go overboard but about 2-3 glasses a day. A little bit of sunshine are necessary for your bone health.

Yeah...you're right. There's leftover chicken, rice and spinach from yesterday, I'll finish them off. I just saw that the crisps were only 100 kcal, and went for them. Not skipping meals or anything on purpose, just not felt hungry today. Probably cos I'm off my Naproxen pills - they always made me feel starving.

Well, yesterday was pretty good. I got myself some weights, and started my before and after thread. Will update pictures every two weeks.

Went into Oxford, bought weights, carried 35lbs of stuff across Oxford back to the bus, and back home, before doing some lifts with 11lbs weights, and going for my 2 mile walk. Couldn't do my scar massage though...my leg was hurting too much. Grr for being off painkillers, though I know in the long run it'll help me.

Food equalled 1,830kcal, and got all my fruit and veg in, Fortyfour ma'am.

Both days have been pretty good, and I'm enjoying my new invention - baked pears. My mum was talking about making baked apples, and I wondered what it'd be like with pears. Next time, I'll put more fruit inside them though, and more cinnamon.

Well done doing your walk and your weights, but you need to make sure you have a balanced weight routine to avoid injury.

5kg weights, doing 4 different lifts, working my pecs, biceps, triceps and deltoids. 3 sets of 10 reps, every other day - I shouldn't injure myself doing that.

you need a back exercise added in there, I won't suggest any leg work as that would be covered by your Physiotherapy exercises.
