Big Time NEWBIE....some questions

Well Im 20 yrs and the last 3 years of my life have been very rough. Rough as in nothing but complete laziness....So the other day I jsut said enough is enough....and went to the gym. Got a membership and started biking to get myself ready....I never been is this bad of shape before ever. I tohught I was going to have a heart attack. Im 6'3 158lbs....I want to get into shape a little bit before I started pounding the weights. Honestly I dont think I can gain weight. I eat fast food everyday all day. And dont gain a pound. I am completely new at working out. I doubt I will even notice a size difference. Any pointers you guys could give me? To set me in right direction??? :)

THANKS

1. You'll want to get your diet in check. There's plenty of info around, but I'm fond of Beradi's Lean Eating series and Men's Health's Power 12 Foods article. Diet will factor in for 80% of your effort.
2. Get yourself into a well designed lifting routine. I always push "New Rules of Lifting" because I know of about 30 people other than myself that are doing it with great success. It has great info for new people and Alwyn Cosgrove designed the workouts.

Where can I go to find out what to eat??? Im a very picky eater but I am very into changing that.....I run 1-2miles a night while I can and/or bike 7-8 miles a day, sometimes both...thanks

As for food, the Men's Health website has many articles on the subject. Try:

I myself go with the Abs Diet and the 12 power foods. Has been working out great.

Thanks Guys, I just dont see myself getting built, im a skinny lil guy never had weight on me ever....

If you're wanting to put on some muscle, there's a well regarded book called "Scrawny to Brawny" for hardgainers.

And eat your vegetables! They have more value than just vitamins and minerals. They add an alkaline load to compete against the acidic loading of protein. A diet that is too skewed to protein can cause muscle and bone wasting from the acidic pH.

Yeah I went thourgh those read he posted and wrote everything down that I like....HOws pasta?? Like chief boy R' D?.....I plan on giving this my all. Starting from complete scratch. No more micky Ds...I have ate there everyday since I was 17, 3 full years.....no more pop for me...either I set guys!!!

WHY?!

Because of sodium?? Whats so bad about it? I cant gain weight if I try. I have not been to a fast food place in 4 days. I have bene biking everyday 8miles to get my heart in shape before I start pounding the weights...is that a good idea?

You can gain weight if you try. If you're not gaining, you're not trying hard enough. You can begin weight training now, you won't do anything but help the cause.

Im going to start doing sit up and pushs on my own....before I jump right into, does that sound good??? Im a skiin lil guy here...I doubt I will will be able to bench press 120lbs.....but who knows tilll I try...

A lot of people state that they can't put on anything at all, I actually thought that I was like that as well until I learned that I wasn't eating half enough or anything to grow at all. Scrawny to Brawny is a very good book to read for hardgainers, once you read his stuff, you understand why you aren't getting anywhere.

Hig protein diet is what I am starting, Im in the gym everyday riding 8mmiles on a bike getting things inline jsut starting to hit the weights. Well see what happens...

None of you guys think that biking 8 miles might have something to do with his weight gain struggles? Me and my friends would run 1 mile tops almost every workout day. I've heard you only really need 20 minutes of good cardio a day to keep your heart in good condition. As for situps i think most people disaprove of them now because of the strain it puts on your back. I've done most of my weight training for chest/shoulder/back with free weights on an adjustable bench, this helps build stablizer muscles as well. Crunches and mile run for abs. You gotta decide what suits you best though, goodluck.

Yeah, many hardgainers post their routine, how they cant gain weight and all of that. And theire routine always has alot of cardio, often alot of cardio before weight training. Im not saying not to do cardio, but the more cardio the harder it is to eat enough to get a surplus, i would cut down the biking.
