Bicep Size

I'm looking to gain in weight overall, but always look closely at my bicep size, so I was wondering what other people's sizes are, so I dont set a ridiculously low or high target. Mine are currently 12", and my height and weight details are in my sig.

No problem. Nah it's just that It's hard to notice small growth by just checking in a mirror. Other's might notice it, but we generally don't. So Biceps are just an easy thing to measure, so I try to use them to gauge my growth.

Alan, before you begin measuring i think you should learn more about training and eating properly. You need to have a fountation, your measuring the size of the windows before the floor is poured so to speak(building a house).

Great analogy! Should be added to the newbie faq.

Bench Press Technique Question....

When i do the last set on the bench, with my max load. In an attempt to give-it-all I tend to raise my lower back and butt off the bench.
I was wondering if its bad or ok to do that ????

Thanks.

It's not necessarily bad to arch your back, but if your butt comes off, it's definetely bad news. It's a recipe for injury, and it's illegal in a weight lifting competition.

What GBPF said is right. Arching your back some is fine. But, do not lift your butt. With time and discipline, you can teach yourself not to do this.

The flatter the better dont push with your feet on the floor that makes your back arch. Concentrate all of your force in your upper body.

Quick Question - when measuring biceps how and where are you suppose to measure them. I mean, unflexed, flexed - what's the deal.

Actually, if it's the 'max-give-it-your-all' bench technique that you're after then pushing with the feet is a good idea. Back arched, elbows tucked, scapula retracted, bring the bar down to the lower portion of the chest and explode it up. This would be ala powerlifting style.

I do unpumped and unflexed, first thing in the morning. This way, your measurement is the smallest possible.

But, whichever way you choose to do it, you should always do it the same way so that your measurements are in sync.

I like that anaology, thanks man. I try to take time to learn more, but quite often school gets in the way. I know quite a lot more than most my age though, but everyone can always learn more:) Also I can't afford, to get many heavy weights for home, and dont have time to make big, difficult meals, which can be a problem.

yeah i know the thing is though if you compare to someone and ask how big theres are you could say that yours are for example 17" and the other guy could say that his are 15". The guy who says 17" measures his pumped up after a work out and flexed and the guy that says 15" measures his first thing in the morning before breakfast an unflexed thus most likely has the bigger ones.

Compete against yourself and you will go further.

Who cares what other people measurements are? There are so many factors (i.e. bone size, muscle type, leverage, muscel insertion point, etc.) My buddies biceps are 16 inches, mine are 12. I curl more. Go figure??
