best way to build leg strength for impact

Hey everyone, I am new here so here it goes. Within the last 3 1/2 years I have torn both my acls and have had them repaired ( currently 6 months post-op on the second one ) and I would like to know the best way to brace your legs for impact motions like running and my eventual goal to play soccer again. As it is right now, if I run a quarter of a block both knees will ache really bad on the knee cap right about the patella tendon. I have gained 40 lbs since the last one that I am getting off now through going back to the gym and using the eliptical machine for cardio, but this doesn't help me with getting my knees used to impact.
thanks for the help everyone,
Paul

I've injured both knees (torn cartilege) and had surgery on one. What helped me most to eliminate knee pain was leg extensions and leg curls. Start out with light weights and high reps (100) and gradually increase the weight and reduce the reps. I found the heavier the weights I use the less knee pain I have. I do have to do the exercises 2 times a week or the pain returns.
