Best Time of Day to Exercise?

I work a late swing shift and often don't get home until 1:30-2am, and then get to sleep about 2:30-3am. I get up about 11am and then head back to work about 3:30pm at the latest (usually earlier if I have a meeting)- Monday through Friday. I live about a hour from work and I do a lot of overtime (I am a supervisor of a homeless shelter).

I'm trying to figure out the best time of day for me to do my 2 miles on the treadmill. For the last two days, it's been anywhere from 12:30pm and 2:00pm. I'm finding I feel GREAT after the exercise and I'd love to keep going, but work obligations cut me off long before I'm tired. My work really wears me out some days and I'd love nothing more then to hop on the treadmill some days when I get home, just to get the same "high" I'm on after my afternoon exercise. But I worry that it will just get me wired and I won't be able to sleep.

Should I keep going with just the afternoon workouts, or should I add something for after work so I can "wind down" after my long day? Is there a wrong time of day to exercise anyway? Like a time when walking/jogging will be least effective in shedding the pounds?

I think the most important thing is consistency. I have worked out both before and after work and seen the same results. I prefer before work. Can you get up just a bit earlier?

I can't really get up earlier because I cherish my sleep. :) I'm going to try it tonight and see how I feel and how easy it is to go to sleep afterwards.
