Well like alot of you out there... I have finally gotten fed up with how I look, I weight 274 and I'm sick of it I hate looking in the mirror I hate how I look when I see pictures of me.. I have no self confidence, self esteem is horrible, I just I'm ready to be healthy I have always been big and it first started around 5 or 6 years old I wasn't fat but thats when I started to gain moreless. Heart attacks are bad on my grandpas side he died in 94 and I lost my dad in 96 all from heart problems grandpa was 48 and my dad was 35, and of course my dad's wasn't from weight or any thing related it was something he was born with but It still gets to me you know? I am just ready to be healthy and finally get a grip on my life... It's going to be HARD to do but I can put off over and over or say I will do it tomorrow, but the thing is It's not going to just happen on it's own ( would be nice ) but reality is you gotta make it happen. I plan to start fresh in the morning and take my life back from this.. Im ready to feel and look amazing and can't wait till I start to see small changes. My goal is start at 274 and finish off at around 180.

I will be honest I have been getting so much motivation from this site to truly make a change it's unreal.. but then I get to reading about you should do this exercise not these to make it happen, then another person says the opposite... It's all so confusing to me I'm 6'0 274lbs and I'm 23.. I just need a way to find a routine to get in and understand everything so I can make this happen.. if anybody could help I'd REALLY appreciate it... but Ready or not it's going to happen It's time for me to man up and just do it!.

Wish me luck!

Hey and welcome to the forums. Sorry to hear about your father...
You seem quite like ready to make a change and that's a great step. In terms of exercise don't worry too much about what to do. The best thing is to just get moving, but start out slow and work your way up. You want to make your nutrition your primary goal because I truly believe that's what matters the most in weight loss.

I think you can easily get to your goal by the end of the year, but it will definitely take a bit of willpower and some patience. You and I started out at about the same weight and I also decided enough was enough. You seem to have the right attitude, "Nothin to it but to do it!" This forum is awesome for support and advice, and it has definitely contributed to my current loss. Much luck to you going forward.

Hey man, with your height and build (naturally decent shoulders) you could look awesome at the end of it.

I'd suggest starting to run everyday, do as much as you can. If you can only run for 5mins to start, thats ok, but build up every day if you can. Dont give up after 5mins though, walk it off, then do another 5, then just go home when your too tired...

If you dont fancy running, go to the gym atleast 3 times a week and start to notice a difference. Do cardio as much as weight training though.

The best thing I have found is taking up a sport. I recently took up Boxing, and am doing it 4 nights a week. Each session lasts 2 hours, so thats 8 hours of boxing a week.

Skipping is also great, I started skipping and I cant stop now, it becomes fun!

Losing weight I believe is alot down to diet also. Dont put yourself on a so called 'diet', cause a diet comes with rules and rules are meant to be broken :) Just eat healthy, im sure your not dumb, and you can tell which are the realy bad foods and which arent. I.e, just lay off chrisps, chocolate, fizzy drinks. Have 3 square meals a day, each containing an equal amount of carbs and protien, and have veg whenever you can. Snack on fruit, drink plenty of water.

Also, its really important to keep this in your head...
Dont keep thinking your going to lose like 7lb a week, just set it at 2lb a week, because this is a healthy weight to lose per week that you can keep off.
2lb a week, x 12 weeks, is 24lb. That is 2 stone. So you can lose 2 stone in 4 months. But dont think thats all youll lose, cause the first few weeks, and depending on how hard you work, you could lose alot more, trust me. :)

You can do it pal.

Uhhh, I see a stud behind all that!

Trust that instinct, that this place is incredibly motivating.
I only joined a few months ago, but any time I get down on myself and my efforts, I make a trip to WLF, and a bunch of really awesome people kickstart me back into high gear.

Very best of luck to you!

Hey Texjosh,

I know where you are and what you want. I am 49 ( a little bit older-lol) and decided since I had been overweight my whole life that enough was enough. I decided that I had spent 50 years overweight( yes, I was the fat kid in grade 1) that this was the year I was going to change. At my heaviest I was about 320 pounds- a few years ago- I went down to 220 and over the last couple of years I snuck back up to 255, I am 5'!!". In August of last year - my 49th birthday I decided this was the day. My 50th birthday was going to be a celebration of the new me. I took up running. Believe me when I tell you I have never, ever been a runner. I did it anyway. I started with 1/8 mile running before I had to stop- I was wheezing and couldn't breathe. I kept at it. Now I am running 5KM in 23 minutes and am training for a 10 KM race in March. Oh, and I am also down to 196 pounds. The exercise helped to change the shape of my body- I have been down here before but have a different shape this time. More toned and less weight around my middle. I am going to start weight training this week along with my running. Okay, so that is exercise but I had to watch what I put in my mouth too. I lost the last 100 pounds on Weight Watchers ( points system). They have a new points plus system out now but I don't know what the difference is. It works believe me. If you don't know how to eat healthy this will help. If you don't know about healthy eating and don't want to join WW there is lots of good stuff on this forum. This last time I lost weight I went by one thing- Calories in must be lower than calories out. In other words you have to eat less calories than you are burning. Pretty simple isn't it? I ate as healthy as I can. I am one of these all or nothing people. Once my willpower gets fired up- nothing is going to break it. I just said no to cookies, cake, chocolate, etc. I think I drove my wife nuts-haha. She said " How can you do that?". I am determined and nothing is going to stop me this time. I want to get down to 175- I haven't been there since I was probably 12. You can do this. Sorry this is kind of long winded but have faith in yourself and if you cheat or have a bad day put it behind you and start fresh again. Good luck in your journey and remember- You can do this!!

Best of luck! It was hard for me in the beginning but now working out and watching what I eat just comes naturally. I'll be looking to see your in between pics!
