Beginner pics advice plz

Well I'm ready to get serious and to get into shape. I just got my gym membership today and I'm starting tomarrow. I also bought some healthy food, and some protein. I'm 6'0 and weight 210lbs, I don't mind my weight but I want to lose a lot of my fat. My friend who I'm gonna be working out with says I should just try to get bigger and not worry about cutting my fat but I wanna get more cut up so I can eventually see my abs. What do you guys think? Should I just try to bulk up or should I cut up first and then try to bulk up? Also I'm a beginner so any advice would be appreciated.

Id say cut slowly, about 1-2pounds a week thats about out 500kcal deficit a day. You will make awesome progress in the start anyway, even at a deficit - just dont cut to hard.

Cut first definetely. But, if you want - you can still work out with your buddy. You won't gain any muscle mass because you'll be in a calorie deficit, but lifting with your friend can only help. It will aid in losing weight and also help you to maintain what muscle you already have.

It's also easier in my opinion with someone to train with to get down there when you're tired/run down/looking for an excuse.

Cut.. But even though you're cutting, since you're just starting you will gain some muscle. So if you eat and lift right, you've got a lot to look foward to.

I was 5'7" 205 26% BF (at 16)and benched 95lbs (August 2005), now thanks to wrestling, weight training 4 times a week (after wrestling season) spring football, and up until now weight lifting more with some light cardio, im at 5'8" weigh 158lbs, bench 205 3 times and BF is i dunno im gussing 13% i can see the top 4 abs. Pretty much im trying to say is the goin is tough but trust me you will see results, try getting involved in sports because working out is less of a hassle when you enjoy it and when your motivated by coaches and teamates and/or friends. Lift for now and do sports, you would be surprised how much fat is burned lifting weights so go in cycles, bulk, cut, bulk, cut in that order. I think you are in the same position i was so if you have any questions just ask.
