Before or After?

Ok, so here's the thing. (and I will warn you, in order to get the full picture, there will be some tmi moments....) Last night, I had this massive pain. It was right where you would have heart burn, I guess. It was right where I had my gall baldder pain. I had the gb removed 4 years ago. Anyway. This morning, I went out for my 3+ mi run. I did the first mile and half just fine. Going back for the next mile and half started out ok until near the end. I got the sudden urge that I needed a bathroom...and fast. The more I ran, the worse it got. So, I stopped running. I walked most of the way back, but then I realized I wasn't going to make it, so I began running again. Almost didn't make it. While I was sitting on the toilet  , I got the feeling I would either pass out or hurl. Luckily I did neither. Finally I was able to shower and dress. I felt fine afterwards and had 2 slices of toast with pb and some milk.

My hubby was concerned, so I thought I would pose this Question to you: Is it better to eat something small before you workout, or is it ok to workout, shower and then eat? (what I usually do)

if trying to build muscle than just have a normal protein, carb type meal about 2hrs before hand so that you fuel that workout

if trying to lose wt i wood have a protein and fat type meal beforehand and then wait until just before you get hungary and train...it takes a little bit of guess work / time to get this down but i get hungary in the split of a second and then i no it's training time

the worse thinhg i see people to is to have a big dinner at about 7pm, then sit on the couch untill bed time a;; the ahile the big meal is storing as fat...then thry get up and go for an hour run...then come home showwer, go to work and 2hrs after they have woken up have their 1st meal...this would be about 11 - 13hrs between meals...the absolute worse thing u can do to your body just about

Wendy, if you are talking about weight training, then you should eat something about an hour before lifting, depending on what you eat. If you're talking cardio, then yes you can do fasted cardio. Some peeps swear by it, others are not so convinced. I have never done it, so I can't give you a personal opinion. Glad you are feeling better

jpc hit it on the head.

I personally live for fasted cardio. It does something magical to my body and kick starts weight lose. As soon as you eat, sugar is put in your blood stream, that's what the body uses first as energy. With no blood sugar the body starts eating itself. It's also easier on the body, 30 minutes of cardio and you're done. After a meal it can take 20 to 30 minutes to burn off the suger in your blood stream before the body even considers metabolizing body fat.

With that said I cannot kickbox or lift on an empty stomach. It's just too intense.

Try morning cardio for a week on an empty stomach and then an evening cardio, and don't eat after your evening cardio and see what happens. You'll flip out! You'll disappear... I'm living proof that it works.

p.s. And if you want to get real intense, wait 60 minutes to eat after morning cardio. Let that body feed on fat. I spent 2 years running a program for the millitary for soldiers who needed to lose weight or lose their jobs. That's what we did, it's a technique the Army has been using for years. They don't use it because it doesn't work.

Ok, so what you are saying then is to do cardio at night - try for a week. I do one week of cardio in the morning, then one week of cardio in the evening. Perhaps I will do that. But let me ask you. If I nromally do cardio in the morning then weight train in the afternoon, how would I do my weights in this new schedule? Do them immediately before cardio? Do them earlier in the day?

Be careful about fasted cardio...Im a big firm believer in NOT doing fasted cardio... but I will not tell you what to do. But I have actually passed out from doing cardio on an empty stomach because someone told me its a good idea. Never again will I do that. If you feel better, than eat something GOOD for breakfast in the morning, then do your cardio, and I find that it fuels your workout better. A bowl of whole grain cereal with some fruit mixed in works well, and will keep you pretty full for a while after your workout, and you still lose weight, i did. Just lose weight the healthy way, you will keep it off a whole lot easier. Make sure take care of your health!!

Yeah as I mentioned Stepp, some peeps swear by it and others, well, just have other opinions. It's good to hear both sides.

Wendy,

Try doing a split. Cardio in the morning and at night. It really sparks weight lose.

The cardio on an empty stomach isn't for everyone. Try it for a week and see what happens.

This is what split cardio did for me in 4 months:

I lost 40lbs of scale weight and put on muscle. Split cardio rules!

if doing cardio in the morn just have a small protein and water shake 30mins before it which will preserve muscle, supply amino acids yet you will still use fat as main energy source....if doing at night do it just before you start to get hungary as that's a fair indication your food is digested...i don't really think it matters that much as at the end of the day it's cal's in vs cals out

I almost completely disagree with most things in this thread. Wendy, this is a huge wake up call... YOU ARE DOING TOO MUCH ON NOT ENOUGH FUEL. Fasted cardio is not recommended. Yes, everyone has opinions and this is mine :p

It does NOT metabolic sense. The point is this... you need some sort of fuel before asking your body to run 3 miles. Are you gonna drive for 30 miles on an empty tank of gas? NO! :D

Now, it is not smart or advised to eat a heavy meal before cardio. But you can wake up, have a SMALL glass of OJ and half a banana or 1 slice of toast or something. NO PROTEIN because a protein/carb combo will take longer to digest and we don't want that since you are doing morning cardio.

Just a small dose of glucose (the OJ or bread or half a banana). Try to eat and then walk for a bit. Try to get at least 15 minutes in before your breakfast and cardio.

The whole notion about the body switching over to burn fat stores... not true. Sorry, wish it was. When the body has NO blood sugar to burn... it does NOT start eating your stored fat. It starts a process called gluconeogenesis- which means taking proteins or muscles and turning them into sugar.

It's not wanted or recommended your body ever get to that state. Wanna lose fat? Get your eating schedule and workout schedule to match. Make it so you can eat something small before cardio.

Sorry for the long post.

Wendy,

I'd try fasted cardio before dismissing it. I use to lift weights, so I have a fair amount of muscle, some of which I wish I could lose. I don't want an overly muscular look. Here's what happens to me when I do fasted cardio; I get skinny and lose NO MUSCLE! I'm telling you this from EXPERIENCE! Try it, you may like it. or you may not...

As much as our bodies react in the same way some peoples bodies respond differently. There are some body builders that do no cardio leading up to a show, all they do is pull the reigns in on their diet and pose and they get shredded. Others need 2 hours of cardio a day to lean out. You may have a stuborn body that wants to hold on to fat and a lot of the ACE certification 101 stuff may not work. You have to find out what works for you. A lot of people say eating at night is fine. If I eat at night is slows my progress, I know that from experience, I don't care what the science is or what a book says. I know if I consistantly eat at night the scale doesn't want to budge. Now that's my body, that's how my body reponds to food eatin' after 8pm.

I have a client who's a Calvin Klien underwear model, he trains me and helps me with my diet. He has the body from hell! He does fasted cardio and never eats past 7pm. He does a split cardio 7 days a week 3 weeks prior to photo shoots. He says it's the only way he gets the veins to pop out that run down to his crotch. This dude is some serious s**t.

On another note, congrats on losing 2lbs. That's awesome.

p.s. That's the beautiful part of this site, between Lynn and I you get to hear 2 opinions on just about every topic.:D

LOL Thank you ALL for your input!! And let me just remind you, James, that I AM currently doing FASTED CARDIO in the am. I have tried it. Tha't what I have been doing all along. :D Just wanted to clear that up. :D

Everything makes sense, Lynn. I will re-read your post and put it to use.

Didn't know Wendy. All I read was that you said perhaps you would do that, my bad. Just so you know someone is out there thinking of you. Everyday you pop into my mind and I think 'I hope Wendy's doing good'. You're loved and YOU ROCK! And so does Lynn!:D

I just got back from an OA meeting that I belong to. It was so great. The speaker lost 300lbs and has kept it off for 17 years. He blew me away. The guy looks like he was never even fat in the first place. Unbelievable story.

James, that's cool. :) I dig it! LOL

That's very sweet that you think of us each day. I think of all of you ea day, too. That's great you were able to hear that gentleman. I love those kind of success stories. It's so uplifting! And what motivation! :D Keep it up!!!!
