Becoming a Personal Trainer

Why?
I'm so sensitive towards obesity. I hate how people cannot take care of themselves, I also hate the habits people have. From a fat kid walking around holding a Coca-cola bottle to an obese adult drinking alcohol and eating greasy pork sausages.
Besides, I have loved training and being fit at least half of my life and I'd like to have a healthy and active job without having to spend my time in the office watching a computer. I'd like to teach and help a lot of people achieve their fitness goals and keep myself in perfect shape as well.

My question for you guys is How hard is it to become a good personal trainer without a degree? I just finished my first year studying Business Economics. Although I applied for a Physical Education spot in a university this year, it's pretty hard to get that spot. If I don't get in, I need to continue study business. I'm thinking about taking a fitness trainer course already this fall to get my license.

For me, it takes a lot of experience and research in order to be a good and credible personal trainer. You have to research on the latest workouts and result of studies about body mechanism and losing weight. Out from these, one should apply this through clients or friends (if one has no clients yet). One can learn a lot from the actual execution.

Why do people feel the need to know the "latest workouts". These tend to be just fads and although they may work there are loads of classic training stuff you can do with clients. Being a good personal trainer is more about making a client feel comfortable and pushing them towards their goals than making sure they do the "latest workouts"

I would have to say that the very first stage, often overlooked, is to get certified. YMCA, NESTA, CAN-FIT-PRO, ACSM, ACE, ACT, IFFB are only a couple examples of certifications available out there.

After that, you must be interested in the new research, trends and the marketing-side of the business. I am guessing in your case, the marketing factor probably isn't your biggest challenge to come.

As the third step, you must find a way to distinguish yourself from all the competition. A specialty, a unique promotion, anything that will attract clients to you.
