Becomeing A Personal Trainer =)

Hi there =) I'm sort of a nooby to the gym end of things and I have only been working out for a few months now. I just had a couple of questions to do with being a "Personal Trainer".

I'm wondering if anyone knows the average pay of this job say working out of a gym or spa.
I'm wondering how much you could charge hourly if you worked out of your own home on your own.
I'v seen courses that take 6 months others that take 2 yrs perhaps someone coul'd explain the different oppurtunities from takeing a longer course compared to shorter.

*It would be nice if an actual Personal Trainer or someone with Training experiance could answer this post*

Thank you for your time!

I charge $60 per hour for in-home consultations. I have a lot of gym equipment in my house, but all of my training is at other people's houses. This is normally the way my clients prefer it.

A normal range of charges for in-home training is $40 - $120 per hour depending on your experience. This figure can be higher and lower (as with most professions) depending on you and how much people talk about your skills/experience.

If you are working for/in a gym, don't expect to pull in more than $15/hour unless you have good experience (and lots of it).

Go for it!

Aquantis,
as RIP said, you won't make a ton working in a gym, but it's easier to get clients rather than trying to market on your own. The club usually takes a big cut of the income. The most I have ever seen is a club paying 65% to the trainer for a very credential/experience rich trainer. Chances are you'll work the floor at about 12-15 $/hr. while you try to sell your training services to potential customers.

That can suck if you dont like being pushy.

I charge $75 an hour to go to people's homes. I supply all the equipment they need. I know some trainers require the clinet to have the equipment.

Dont forget about getting insurance as well.

There are over 300 personal training certs out there; some certainly more respecible than others. Do your research on them.

Personally, I teach for an organization called WITS- World INstructor Training School.
This is an up-and-coming cert. It is run at various community colleges across the country (U.S.). It is a 6 week course where you will have 15 hours of classroom lecture, 15 hours of hands-on/ practical, and 20 hours of internship.

May sound like a lot compared to some of the mail-in (sadly-yes they exist) certs. But when you train your first client, or have to show your proficiency to a prospective employer, youre not like, "well, uh..."

Check out WITS.
