Beating the Booze

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone has got any tips or methods for beating the Booze?
I just cant seem to kick the habit and always give in to temptation?
Its tougher than it seems, does anyone have any methods or rituals they go through to help them Cold Turkey the old demon Alcohol?

Hmmm...

The best way to stop drinking is to go cold turkey for a couple of weeks.
Then you'll see how fit you really are. Time a run, or record your weght lifting workout then carry on drinking for another week as you normally would.

Only then will you see how much drink really does effect you.

As with anything, you gotta want to quit before you can quit.
and you gotta have a reason to want it. Have a test run, and that will give you a true reason.

For me... One of the main reasons I keep drinking down to a minimum is because of dehydration.

I quick cold turkey, with the help of a few friends. How much are you drinking? I was drinking easily, 1 case of beer a week, plus a 5th of hard liquor. It is amazing after a month what your body will do.

Why do you drink alchohol? Is it a physical addiction or a psychological addiction? Are you a social drinker or a lone drinker? Do you drink because you are lonely, bored, depressed, introverted...?

errr =s.

does getting fooked once every friday have a big effect on my training?
I've been doing that since i started training.
:( wish i seen this earlier.

To jimed43,
I drink about 4 cans of cider a night, trouble is I tend to do it 4/5 nights a week.

And to dswithers,
I tend to drink a lot when im with friends, trouble is I also go out for social drinks over the weekend with friends, I think during the week I drink at home with my family because im stressed at work.
Yes Ive suffered with depression, but since im on medication for it I cant drink as much as I used to because it makes me ill if I drink with the tablets :)

Lewis has a good idea there about not drinking for a short while and then drinking to see the difference...

Are you bored a lot? Do you have any hobbies? Are you just sitting in front of the tube when you get home from work? Maybe you need to pick up some more hobbies so that you don't turn to alcohol for entertainment.

Cheers guys,
Ive decided what to do. As its Christmas coming up, that time of year usually affects my training times anyway.
So over the Christmas and New Year period im going to have a good blowout and then get into my training and diet on January 2nd.
Then I should be able to see which lifestyle I prefer.

I'm with calcium. I just recently started working out again and have cut my alcohol consumption down considerably. I used to be bored, sitting around the house with nothing to do. So, I'd use beer for entertainment/something to do. Now, I'll drink some tonight but that'll probably be it for a while. I drank out of boredom, mad at myself because I wasn't working out etc. Since I've gotten back into training and usually keeping myself busy, its been pretty easy to stay away from it most nights. Keep us updated on your progress. See ya, Greg

I hate suddenly bringing up two week old threads, but I love it when someone says..."yeah...I'll start making changes in two weeks."

Time to Start Now Lads :D
Had a good knees up last night, so now Im going to do my upmost to stick to this as I really want to do this.
Its a Mental Thing really, if I keep myself busy I should be able to do it, Im not going to drink now unless its if Ive got the day off work the next day or on the weekends im off work, so if possible im going to try and drink just 1-2 nights a week if im going out, if Im staying in, Im going to try and avoid it altogether.

When i was younger (and evidently out of shape) i used to drink every weekend, but since I've started working out and getting in shape I've really cut down my alcohol consumption, the only time i find myself getting drunk is on the rarest of occasions (which usually includes hanging out with old high school buddy's, funny how that works) and when i go out to restaurants ill usually just get a diet pop instead of my usual pint of beer.

on its own, science says dry red wine ( 1-2 x 125ml cups) a day is ideeal health... which I believe to doo it that way ( as in a healthful fashion) is thee only way to beat those demons..
as opposed to run away from them..
Mixing it with drugs though is nevvver going to be pretty..

if that's the case for you.. I sincerely wish you luck with your sobriety aand your fitness goals.

If you're on the meds I think you are, first and foremost, mixing it with booze will only make things worse (not just making you sick). I wouldn't recommend it.

I think that you should talk to your doctor about this. They may have advice for you or people you can talk to. Joining a group for an activity that you like instead of meeting up at the pub is a great start as well. Getting out of your habits that lead you to drink helps big time.

Also talking to your friends about it. If you have their support, you never know - one or two may join you in it. If they don't understand, makes you think twice about how close they really are to you.

Like someone said before though. You have to want to quit. Nobody can make you stop drinking or make you have a drink. You have that power. Use it when you are ready to. :)

Old thread I know sorry heh, If anyone is in college and working out I wanna know how you stay away from the alcohol its wayy too temptin!!! Last weekend was homecoming, jimed43 said he used to drink 1 case a week and some hard alc. I probably drank a case and a few shots in one day, was fun but now back to the gym I go!

Agree with others here, quit cold turkey.
Or go have a real good bender, spend some time hugging the toilet bowl and keep telling yourself how much fun drinking is.

My last was a tailgate party at the Patriot's old stadium. Quit the next day, haven't missed it since.

Hey, are you winning the battle? Mine continued on and off until last week. Seems if I don't workout every night of the week, I want to go buy some beer and drink it. I honestly think it provides some sort of stimulation. But, when I workout at night (7:30pm or so) I have absolutely no desire to drink. I think it provides the same "FIX" as the alcohol did previously. As a matter of fact, I drank about 9 beers Saturday afternoon/night and it didn't provide near the "entertainment value" that it did just a few weeks ago. I think you are on track, find something to do that stimulates you or provides the "fix" that alcohol used to and you'll be fine. Keep us updated on your progress. Take care, Greg

I quit both beer and cigarettes in May 2006. Very tough. The thing to remember is take it one day at a time. Success breeds success. Don't think of it as quitting for life (although that is probably your goal); think of it as liberating yourself for today.

For what it's worth, here is something I have realized since I quit drinking. Not once have I woken up and said, "I sure wish I would have gotten drunk yesterday."

i'm trying to get off the bottle too, it's hard...i just want to quit feeling tired all the time, the booze is sapping my energy level!! when i went to the gym every day i had no probs not drinking, but now not being able to make it to the gym, i just took up drinking again, argh!! but hey, i've been off the cigs for a month now, so woohoo for that. one thing at a time i guess.
