Basic Training Preperations

I have made up my mind that I will be joining the military, but ignore that. I want to lose weight and build up my pushups and situps in the next year and I was wondering how I would go about doing that.

My idea is to have a diet along with a schedule of workout sessions that incorporate running, situps, and pushups. I will eventually be posting a journal when I start and I will have pictures up but I was wondering if there is anything special I should know about increasing strength WHILE trying to lose weight.

Current schedule
Wake up at 6a.m.
Do as many pushups as possible
Do as many situps as possible
Run as far as I can
Walk back
Repeat x1

Anything good or bad?
I was told for stamina that reps seem to work the best.
