Hey there! The name's Tom, I'm 26 and I'm from Cork, Ireland. I stumbled across this site a few times over the last few months (whilst I was searching for various weight-loss-related topics), so I decided that I'd finally join.
I've struggled with weight for a long time: I put on weight when I was 10 years old, and my weight continued to rise steadily from then on for the next ten years or so, with the result that by the time I was 20, I weighed 21.5 stone (301 lbs). The next year, coinciding with a series of revelatory counselling sessions, I lost about 5 stone in as many months. I dropped from 21.5 stone to 16 stone, but over the next two years I put on at least another stone again. My weight continued to fluctuate up and down by about a stone until about a year ago.
I moved to Leipzig, Germany on a semester-long Erasmus exchange in September of last year, and when I had to make some changes to my diet, I started to lose weight. The weight-loss was gradual, so I had no idea that I had lost any weight at all until I came home for Christmas, and people commented on my weight loss. Sure enough, I had dropped from 17.5 stone (245 lbs) in September to just over 16 stone (224 lbs) in December. Losing weight without even trying to was something that had never, ever happened to me before. So that gave me inspiration and impetus to continue. So I lost another 8 lbs in January. Now, at the start of June, I've got down to 13 stone 12 lbs (194 lbs). That's literally the lightest I've been in over ten years, by about 2 stone.
So I've joined a gym, and by continuing with sensible eating and exercise, I hope to reach a target weight of between 11.5 stone-12 stone. I'm in no hurry, though, this is no crash-diet - if it takes a year to lose the last 2 stone, then so be it.
Looking forward to sharing my ongoing progress with you fine people.
PS: I'm an aspiring harpsichord player, hence the user name: the Goermans-Taskin harpsichord in the University of Edinburgh is one of the most widely copied instruments.
