Bad knee and exercise ?

Hiya, I wondered if anyone could help me..I want to lose weight and inches off my bum, hips and thighs. The only problem is that I have a bad knee. It creaks and makes a loud grinding noise when I move it. At the moment I do a bit of horse riding for a bit of exercise...is there anything else I could do?? I have started to walk to college when the weather is nice...but thats only 40 mins there and back. Any ideas?? I was thinking of going to the doctor too and see what he suggests.

:i'm not a mother, I only mother people on the internet:

knee problems at your are really should be looked at -

If it's causing you pain, then go to the doctor and have it looked at... no reason to live with something that bothers you.

Honestly, as much as I used to oppose chiropractors.... if you can find one who is certified in ART (active release techniques) he/she will be able to help you. And if it is beyond chiropractic medicine, they will refer you.

You can check for a provider in your area at this site if you are interested:

To be honest...Im really scared to let anyone see it....its been bad for about 7 years now and is just getting worse. I dont want to go into hospital or anything. Im frightened that the doctor will hurt me and make it worse.

Hmmm, seems irrational to me. Start with the chiropractor. I am telling you, these ART guys are good. Yet to meet a bad one.

No need for apologies. Don't be silly. :)

You can take it or leave it, my advice. I just know from past experience, that finding a good doc that can take care of you is amazing. Better than letting the condition deteriorate.

This said, I understand your concern, there are some crappy docs out there. My first surgery was done by a terrible doctor. I spent no time researching and went to the local guy. Needless to say, he made things worse, and I needed a second op. So really, I do understand.

I just don't think you can go wrong with an ART doc. And if it turns out you need something more invasive, spend a lot of time finding the best in your area.

Hey Mandie,

I understand your being leery of having something done to your knee to make it worse, but remember that knowledge is power. You don't have to consent to any treatment you are comfortable with. You are not going to be forced to undergo something you do not want. But knowing what is wrong with your knee is the first step and you can then begin to read about it yourself, consult other physicians or specialists (like Steve said, a chiropractor) and make an informed decision about your treatment.

I think it's a good idea to have it looked at and evaluated by your doctor. Who knows, it could be something that is easily corrected or you could be engaging in some kind of activity that may make it worse.

Im glad you understand....being a student nurse I know too much for my own good (if you know what I mean..lol)...knee surgery is nasty. But hey..it might not come to that. I'll see what one of these guys have to say first. Thanx for your advice.

All people and knee injuries are different so just because it works for me doesnt' mean it'll work for you, but here is what worked for me. I had knee surgery last February. I started out walking slowly and increased my walking each week. At first my knee was so stiff and sore and I wondered if it would ever return to normal. I also did squats and lots of streches for my knee. My other knee is injured too but not as bad and all this exercise has made it better. About 9 months out of surgery I started a new job and there were a lot of hills to walk up and down, my knee acted like it was reinjured all over again it was so sore and stiff, but after research I decided to keep working it out and it would get used to it. Well sure enough it did. It took 2 weeks for the stiffness to start going away. I find that each time I start a new exercise program it is really stiff and sore but as I work it out and keep up with the same activity the soreness finally goes away. So the point to this whole email is that maybe if you try walking a certain distance and keep that distance for a couple of weeks when your knee stops hurting then increase your distance and then keep doing that until you can increase some more. If that doesn't work then I agree with the above about seeing a doctor of chiropractor to see if they can determine the problem. Good luck.

agreed -

and do find a good doctor -
my last round of knee surgery - the hospital actually wrote in indelible ink on my good knee - NO - just in case there was any doubt as to which knee needed the surgery.

fixing a knee these days is no big deal - and it's so much better than living with impaired mobility...

I have knee issues galore. Last year in December something similar happened and my knee was doing the same thing. Like Steve was saying, lots of other locals were telling me to go to a chiro. I don't know what ART is or whatever, but the one I went obviously didn't know it. He swore that my knee issue was because my hips were out of alignment, and it was causing my back to be S shaped, which I knew was true, but I also knew that my right leg is 3/8" longer than my left. So he puts me on orthotic inserts for my shoes and wants to pop everything from my neck to my hips. In nearly no time at all, he had me to the point that I could barely walk, and it was all I could do to turn my head 1" to each side. Even when I was that stiff and in so much pain, he still wanted to forcefully pop the painful stuff, and it was so bad that I would yell out like a little girl when I was in the office. I finally just had to stop going.

On a more positive note, I saw a normal doctor and he did some X-rays and pushed my kneecap around a little. He didn't find anything torn, but, he said I have a condition, and I forget the name of it, but basically the ligaments on the outside of my kneecaps are genetically too tight. Basically if I get out of shape at all, which I was at the time, these ligaments pulling on my kneecap will cause my kneecap to not track straight, which could result in grinding and stuff if the least little thing is wrong. He told me to do leg extensions to beef up the lower inside knotty part of my thigh so that it will grab the kneecap and hold it flatter by counteracting the tight ligaments on the other side. Amazingly enough, it worked. I saw him in February I guess. By May I was going on long bike rides again. So, based on my experience, you may want to have this checked out. He showed me that a "normal" kneecap should be able to flop around all over the place pretty easily when your leg muscles are relaxed, and it's all you can do to move mine. If yours is the same way, it could be the same condition.

I don't know if it's related or not, but right now I can't hardly walk. Friday night I did 40 leg extensions in a row and woke up in the middle of the night not only sick from a stomach bug, but my knee was really sore, and has just gotten worse. I'm hoping it's not the leg extensions. Maybe I stressed it while snowboarding in Colorado last week and that was just the last straw, I'm not sure. I sure feel like crap though, limping around like an old man.

Steve you ever heard of the bones on your lower thigh being sore like under the top of your kneecap? I boarded all day Monday and Tuesday, took Tuesday and Wednesday off due to soreness, then ran 4 miles Thursday, and Friday night I did the 40 leg extensions, I probably had, I dunno, 50 pounds on there. Now the area around the main tendons that attaches my quad to my kneecap is horribly sore, I can barely walk up stairs. Yesterday I tried to ride a bike but only made it a mile and had to walk home. Any kind of pressure to it hurts like hell. What sucks is that this is my "good" knee. I have had lots of problems with my right, but this is on my left.

It could really be anything. It could be a direct soft tissue of the knee issue, or it could be an imbalance elsewhere, such as your ankle or hip. I really do suggest going to an ART guy, can't stress it enough.

Looks like the closest provider to 42001 is still 90 miles away... and knowing chiro's... they want you in there 3 times a week. I'm not sure I could take advantage of that. I'd probably try if I could find someplace local. I can't drive 180 miles 3 times a week, if that's what they want.
