Back Pains With Ab Workouts

when i do to like 4 russian twists or very little crunches and situps i get very bad pains in my back and cant really work my abs. i keep my back straight at all time, and try and focus all the weight to the ab region.

am i doing something wrong, or is that because i am thin, that my back is weak, please advise.

you most likely are having a weak back

the russian twists esp can place great stress on the back

remember to always work your back after a abdominal workouts

do you feel the pain during the workout or after the workout

your better not taking chances seek doctors advice if the pain isnt subsiding

hey i was just doing some crunches... my back doesnt hurt when i do them but i cant exactly beath when im tensing my stoach muscles, so i try do a max of 10 rep crunches but you see its not that my ab muscle are holding out after the 10 its me, and my fitness, and the fast that im holding my breath.

im lying on the floor flat, bend knees, feet flat on the floor, legs together, i cross my arms and slowly try and push my shoulders and head and slightest part of my uper back farward, i hold for 5 seconds, then slowly go to the floor... is that wrong?

my friend says my back may be from not stretching... but how do u stretch ur back? as shown in the post below ;)

are you streching before ?, warming up ... if you are not stretching before or warming up i think that mite be a major cause

you can make a google search for "back stretching"

take a few simple exercise and start gentle and easy and dont force the stretch

but most important work your back muscles with back extentions on the floor or some other effective exercise that suits your current fitness

How much do you weigh? Are you larger? Maybe you should try more on strengthening your back, and less on trying to get abs. Try using regular crunches and no twists until you get your core stronger.

go to a doctor first he will be able to best advise on your next course of action. If he suggests that you can go back to the gym start doing some back exercise aswell. Ask your gym instructor for some for example deadlifts, hyperextension or good morning may be able to target you weaker core muscles. Just remember good form will be key.

busyman, im quite thin, im about 65kg, but im 5"11 and 15 years old.

ill ask my dad (docter) what he thinks.

thanks for the help

I had this same problem due to a long distant Rugby injury, not much fun.

I saw a chiropractor for a couple of sessions but also did deadlifts with light weights - scared to damage the old injury. I was doing like two sets of 15 reps with 15kg's of weight, nice and slow. After working this into my routine twice a week one month later my ab work was completely different. The pain and sickness came from my belly not my back :D

I must add that whilst I spent a month working on my lower back I did no crunches etc, just some leg raises to keep the abs doing some work.

Poor form could also be the cause of the pain...

It does not sound like your back at all but more your hip flexors are tight. Remember everyone that your psoas attaches on your spine and if it is too tight will cause extension of your spine and compression of the lower back muscles. If you feel pain in your lower back up to your ribs in back that is most likely a hip flexor issue. If you want to work your abs you want to stretch this muscle first so that is not shortened thus enabling you to use the proper muscles to perform the ab exercises.
You are young. Most back pains are musclular not skeletal. Any good stretching routine will help loosen up your back and ease pain.
