Back Pain from Lifting

My wife has started getting some serious back pain -- probably from her lifting. She works out with a pair of 25 lb dumbbells (their names are Alex and Ben). She divides her lifting between deadlifts (bent at the waist) and squats. I do a lot of lifting with the same weights, but almost exclusively squats.

Can anyone identify what's likely to be the source of her back pain? Any suggestions about proper lifting techniques? Are there any types of movements she should absolutely avoid? Any suggestions for strengthening exercises? Any ideas for recovery plans since she's already having pretty significant pain?

Thanks,

I think it would depend a lot on the pain. Is it right at where the buttocks & back meet or higher up? The joint is where mine will hit me. I injured it back in my 20s doing squats. It was because I let the weights twist me and started the problem. I only do very light squats now and am hitting the dead lifts heavier.

If I were her I would take several days off until the pain goes completely away then hit it lighter and work up again.

The pain is mostly in her lower back, where the buttocks and back meet. The "weights" are actually twin babies. I've been trying to do more of the lifting, but it would be pretty hard for her not to lift them at all. I'm trying to get her to cut out the straight-legged "good morning" style of baby lifting in favor of sumo-squat-style lifting. Lifting repeatedly just using the lower back seems to be the problem.

Have you considered seeing a chiropractor?

There is nothing worse than having a bad back. A bad back can really restrict you. Please do not take it lightly.

Also, like someone suggested. Take a full break and then slowly building up the weights, seem like an option.
