Back Pain for Someone New to Jumping Rope

About to take a long trip, away from my gym membership and thought it would be a good idea to begin jumping rope - it's strenuous, muscle-building and portable.

I'm generally in pretty good shape - 5'8", 151 pounds. I'm new to jumping rope so I expected some issues along the learning curve but was not expecting this back pain that I'm experiencing.

Here's what I think happened. When I was first just trying to get the hang of it I was jumping pretty high and probably slamming my calves on the floor. That's when the pain began. I continued - jumping a tad less off the ground and staying on my toes. But the pain continued. It's kinda sharp and especially bad when I'm trying to go to bed.

I've taken now 5 days off of jumping rope or doing any type of work out and I'm wondering if/when I should go back to it. I don't want to give up on my new exercise when I've hardly even started. I did some back stretches today for a good 10 minutes. Hoping they'll do the trick.

Ideas and advice?

Depending on what provoked the pain you may need more serious attention but here's what i can think of;
Ice your back to help relax muscles and treat inflammations.
try some simple stretches, but if your back hurts when doing them leave it alone.
(try to touch your toes, bring your hand down your side, you can find more in the "exercises" tab of this site.)

If it lasts for more then 3 weeks i would suggest medical attention ( Physio, or doctor. )

never to ignore back pain

i would suggest, never to ignore any kind of back pain as it can be severe. so consult to your expert and then do the things.
also, as this is just a start of your back pain.so try inversion therapy techniques and exercises and get rid off this prob permanently and also get a good body system internally and externally.
