Back pain = doing it wrong?

Im brand new to lifting and I was using some dumbbells last night and had sharpe pains in my lower back while doing it with my right arm. Does that mean im doing it wrong? Or could it mean that the dumbbell was too heavy?
 
bicep curls? make sure you dont swing your body at all doing them, let the arms to ALL the work, if thats not it.. then i dont know :(
 
Working out your lower back is a good idea. But if the weight wasn't too heavy for the muscle you were working, try sitting on a bench and doing it if possible.
