Back on Track

Well, I fell off the wagon, and now I want to get back on track. Perhaps if I post in a diary, that will help me stay focused.

At the beginning of the year I actually stuck to my New Year's Resolution and began losing weight (plan: eat less, exercise more!). By May 21, I was my lowest weight in several years and had lost 10 lbs. This was half my short term weight loss goal.

Then I started to slip in lots of little ways, and it has turned in to 3.4 lbs gained back in 1 1/2 months. Why does it always come on easier than it goes off?!?!? :(

Goals:

1) Cardio - jog 30 minutes per day. Record efforts. Yesterday I jogged 3 miles in 33:18 minutes. Walked only twice. It just stopped raining, so I'm about to jog now.
2) Strength - begin recording weight lifting efforts. Buy some heavier weights. Clear out a spot in my bedroom for my weights and exercise ball. I do some strength training currently, but don't record it. So I know I lose track of how many days pass before I do it again. Muscle = Higher metabolism.
3) Food - record what I eat. This is the one I hate - facing what you've done. I will probably do all this offline in a journal I already keep, then post to this diary once or twice a week maybe.
4) Weight - back to morning weigh ins. Record morning weight each day in my journal. This really does keep me on track, and I've slowly gained weight by not doing it much this summer.

Wish me luck.

Hi Patty! Yes, a diary should help. ALl the support you get here is a wonderful motivator. Recording food is crucial to me, too--do you know FitDay? Fitday.com is free for the basic version and keeps records of your food intake broken down into nutrition info, your exercise, weight loss, everything. Looking at those reports can be VERY "enlightening" ;)

Keep posting, and you'll hit your goal!

We have the Friday Scale Day club here, you might want to join... I've read on some books that you should weigh yourself every day, and others say just the opposite because it can be discouraging because your weight can fluctuate every day... Come join the once a week weigh in ... and see if that helps keep you on track - you're weighing in the same time every day, wearing the same clothes... so you should see a difference... :)

There are several good online food journals that are easy to use, www.fitday.com or www.sparkpeople.com plus counless others... they're good because they give you reporting of your total nutrietns and it's also really helpful to see where your calories are going... (especially if you are honest with it... i know iI think twice before putting something in my mouth if I know I have to write it down)

We'll provide you with plenty of encouragement and support and the occassional kick in the behind if you need it... welcome to your diary and lots of successs in achieving your goal... :)

Thanks you guys for posting. I appreciate the encouragement. Well, it has been a week. I exercised as planned, weighed myself each day, increased H2O, watched what I ate, did not write down what I ate. Just got back from a girls' weekend, and lost weight from that! What a surprise. Usually it is a big food fest, but we were all pretty good about eating right for 3-4 days (though we did drink!). Losing some weight has really boosted my morale and renewed my determination. Jogged twice today.

18 yr old

A fiftyish woman was at home happily jumping on her bed and squealing with delight. Her husband watched her for a while and asked, "Do you have any idea how ridiculous you look? What's the matter with you?"

The woman continued to bounce on the bed and said, "I don't care. I just came from having a mammogram and the doctor says I have the breasts of an 18 year-old."

The husband asked, "What did he say about your 56 year old a**?"

"Your name never came up," she replied. :p

Thanks for the chuckle. Glad to see you have such a positive attitude. Keep it up and you will do great!

Cute joke. I'm rotflmao! Love that one! Gotta tell that one to my mother.

Good for you getting back on the wagon. As long as you keep getting back on you will continue to lose. I find posting here really has helped me. I love the support and encouragement that I get from here. I've been struggling and stuggling but being here has really helped me out.

If a man speaks in the woods, and there is no woman around to hear him, is he still wrong?

I walked this am for 41 minutes, very briskly. I read once that to walk briskly means to walk as if you are late for an appointment. It helps to think of that when walking. Really can up your heart rate.

My neighbor and I have walked together now for months, most mornings. We see people we know at the stores or wherever and they say "We saw you out walking." It's kind of a cool feeling. We have another girlfriend who lives 2 minutes away in the next neighborhood and she has started driving over to walk with us in the am (6:30!) when her husband is in town. We also jog sometimes, but like to walk and talk. It gets so hot here in Texas, you really have to go before 7am or after 7pm. Now two more neighbor ladies who have watched us start to slim down have asked if they can join us. It is so motivating - and we really enjoy the hen sessions while moving. I feel blessed.

More calories to burn today - have to mow lawn and clean house.

Had 1/2 granola bar, water, coffee, toast, 1/2 grapefruit and vitamin this am. Coffee is my new best friend from this past girls' weekend (I have problems with regularity and this helped!). I've given up sodas and junk food, so I figure give up two vices and gain one isn't too bad.

I will post on a couple of people's diaries today and each day. I'd like to give as well as receive encouragement.

Hi, Patty! Congrats for getting back on the wagon! You have such a positive attitude that I know you'll do well! And thanks for the laughs. I really need them some days. Good luck and see you around the forum.

"Never, under any circumstance, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night."

I had to leave town suddenly to help my sister. Did my jogging both mornings while out of town, but my family eats big and I struggled to not eat as much as they do. Gained a little, but I also have problem with consti, so hopefully that's all it is. Am jogging or walking every day. Am eating better than I ever have.

Hi Patty,

Welcome back - it's hard when you're with people/family who tend to eat big isn't it?

It sounds like you're doing great - I walk every morning with a friend at 6:30 too! It's *so* enjoyable!

Your positive attitude and motivation is inspirational!
Keep it up!

Well done with the weight loss you are doing great! Walking is great exercise and it is nice that u have someone to go with to keep u motivated and entertained! Keep up the good work and hope you are having a good day!

Well, it's Monday morning. I'm about to go jogging. Like it, like it, like it.

Goals this week: do upper body strength training and situps 3x, eat right the next 7 days (Wed, Fri, Sat and Sun will be a test).

Some friends returned to town on Friday and Sunday, and we were eating and drinking out with them (Mexican both times). Also went to pool party on Saturday (food served for adults and kids was hot dogs and chips, I kid you not - should have eaten before I got there). Did not eat the quantities I used to (yeah!), but the food choices were not great and the calories too high.

Today is a new day, a new week.

It's always darkest before dawn

"It's always darkest before dawn. So if you're going to steal your neighbor's newspaper, that's the time to do it."

I can't believe it's been two weeks since I've visited. And I'm about to leave town again this morning. I'll have to post on people's diaries when I return.

I hate when two weeks go by and nothing seems to be happening. I walk or jog every day, so I think my fitness is improving. That is a goal of mine to help with high cholesterol. But no weight change sucks. I go up and down within a 2-4 lb range. The high in the range slowly goes down over the months, but it isn't right now.

And I don't know who else has regularity problems, but I do. It makes it difficult to see progress when you have days or weeks of problems that plump up your belly and your weight.

I haven't done strength training as planned, but found a list of good exercises (core and upper body). I'll start this week, tweek the list and post the link with my short list later this week.

I'm leaving for several days at the beach with several other families. Someone else is planning the menu. I called last night to see what they are buying, and it looks like I'll need to bring some of my own food - to eat right and stay regular.

Of course I'm bringing my jogging shoes. And water.... And green tea....

I hope everyone has a great day!!

Some days you're the bug

The beach trip was hard. Fun time, but food was a problem.

Someone else planned the menu. The food was high in fat and calories.

I packed my own cooler and did healthy salads for three of my meals, and bran flakes for 3 breakfasts instead of their casseroles, muffins and pancakes.

They had 10 bags of chips out, M&Ms, s'mores, skittles, ice cream, chocolate covered frozen key lime pie slices on a stick. And let's not talk about the alcohol.

I resisted many times, gave in a little. Jogged on the beach twice (which was amazing).

I think I stayed the same or gained less than a pound. This week I'm continuing to exercise and eat okay, but have had too many alcohol calories. So my weight is up a little, I'm completely bloated, and I'm bummed that I'm coming out of summer about the same or a little heavier than I went into it. :(

Well, my thinking right now is to take this last week before the kids go back to school and count every calorie for the week. Really figure out what daily caloric intake it's going to take to see movement in the right direction on the scale. No alcohol.

This is my most negative post yet, I know. I am just in such a funk.

there was a study recently that laughing for 15 minutes a day, burns calories and can cause a 10 pound loss in a year... thanks for helping us along with our laughter :)

you're still doing well... :D

1010 calories. Made it through first day of counting calories. Thursday. Actually intend to eat more calories than this.

Not a great balance of food choices, but as Scarlett says "After all...tomorrow is another day". Don't know why I thought of it.

Jogged, drank more water than usual, had green tea, will take multivitamin now with more agua and off to bed.

Feel happier tonight than did today.

Knock Knock

"Knock, knock."
"Who's there?"
"Control freak. Now you say 'Control freak who?'."

Jogged/walked 44 minutes this am with two friends. Am lucky we are all so consistent. We show up outside at 6:15am every day. Did cool down stretches, crunches, the plank, push ups, calf raises, the bridge (good for butt), and several upper body exercises with weights. First time I've done all that in a while.

Going to lake today, but will count the calories I'm bringing (usually it's a snack and drink fest). Might go water skiing and jet skiing.

Feel happier and more motivated today. Yesterday was one of my lowest days (attitude, not weight) this year. Shaking it off.
