Averageing calories

Hi all,
Ive got a sneaking suspicion Ive read about this before, and it may have been on this forum but when I tried to search for it I couldnt find anything so I apologise in advance if this has already been answered on here.
So, my question: Say I over eat one day, if the next day I cut back to less calories then what I would normally eat on a 'good' diet day does that even out to 2 good days? Or can that be bad for you?

I don't think it's bad for you if you exceed your calories and cut back the next day. As long as you don't do it often, you would be fine.

If you have more days in a week when you overeat, then that's a problem.

For myself I can binge on weekends without gaining any weight. You might want to test for yourself how many times a week you can overeat. If you gain weight, cut back on your calories.

Yes, you can average it out. And sometimes, having a surplus is a good thing -- it shakes up your metabolism a little bit so it doesn't think you're starving yourself. I have a surplus day about 1 day out of every 7. I don't binge, but I do end up with a surplus of 500 to 800 calories for that day.

Thanks for the advice guys

rubylee: I do that too! I can be really good during the week (mostly) but it kinda goes to pot at the weekends.

TomO: thats a good point, I might try having planned 'surplus days' and maybe that will help make the days where it goes a bit haywire happen less often.

I'm beginning to wonder about this myself. Hubby came home last week from being out of town for a month and I've cheated on several meals which I hadn't really done yet, but the next day I would really watch everything I consumed to make sure I was back on track. Then, surprisingly, yesterday I had to tighten the belt an extra notch because my jeans wouldn't stay on right. Also, the scale moved down 1.5 lbs. in a week. Who knows!

Congrats Holly! I hope this week I can make up for my excesses this weekend... Weekends do seem to be my biggest downfall.
