As Girth Grows, Risk of Sudden Cardiac Death Shrinks

Key word "SUDDEN". Obese people don't really have SUDDEN heart attacks...they're looooong expected. Healthier people, as my uncle who ran dozens of miles per day and was in perfect health before he died of a SUDDEN heart attack while, ironically, running on a treadmill, aren't really expected to have heart attacks, which makes most of them seem quite SUDDEN when they do occur.

That's just my take on it.

Just in case anybody thinks it really is a good idea to stay overweight, here's an explanation:

Obesity Paradox: Obese Heart Patients May Live Longer

Just to be clear, no one is saying that being overweight is good for your heart. It is not.

In fact, obesity is poised to overtake smoking as the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., and the majority of those deaths will be directly or indirectly linked to cardiovascular disease.

More than two-thirds of adults in the U.S. are now overweight or obese. Lavie says that if the trend continues the nation may soon see a decline in life expectancy for the first time in decades.

Compared to lean people, overweight and obese people have a much higher incidence of heart attacks, strokes, and death from other cardiovascular causes.

"If we could prevent obesity or limit it, it is very clear that we could reduce heart disease and deaths from heart disease,Lavie says."

But when normal or underweight people get heart disease, the studies show that their prognosis is worse than heart patients who carry extra pounds.

I agree that this is mainly because people who are a normal weight are not expected to have heart attacks. People who are very overweight may take years for it to get to the stage where they will have a heart attack.

My Uncle was morbidly obese and had a "small" heart attack - a warning sign, if you will. I believe the reason that obese people are at less "risk" of a heart attack/fatality due to heart attack is because it's usually life-style related.

People who have heart attacks and are a normal weight and healthy, usually have them because of genetic abnormalities, congenital heart problems, underlying heart disease (which is not always caused by obesity.)
