Arc Trainer/ Cross Trainer

Is there a difference between these 2 machines?

Which is the one that doesn't have hand poles... just a rail like a treadmill...and it has an incline that you can control also like a treadmill?

thanks :)

In our facility, an Arc trainer does not have hand poles, but the cross-trainers do (we call them elliptical machines).

I think Arc Trainer is a brand name.

If it's a solidly built cross-trainer, you can put more emphasis on working your arms, chest, back, shoulders. We have a Life-Fitness model at my employer is it's excellent for that.

Note, though, ellipticals on a low resistance setting do little, because you have momentum carrying the stride. You'll need to set resistance rather high. I use no less than 12 on a scale of 1-20.

It appears both of these things are cardio machines, correct? So regardless of what upper body muscles are worked... the main goal is cardio. At any time you can move more of the body than not... it's a good thing.

So if one machine has upper body movers.... good stuff. This is why working out on the treadmill is more effective when you MOVE your arms as opposed to hold the bar. Obviously balance needs to be first focus.
