Excerpt from my journal... but the ticker still moves! Will wonders never cease? It probably has something to do with the 2-day fast associated with my surgery.
First day of school? Not quite!
Well, I'm all moved into my new house, and I started school on Monday, September 11, 2006.
When I woke up that morning, there were some rumblings in my tummy that, I thought at the time, indicated severe hunger, so I wolfed down my breakfast in an effort to be out the door by 7, as my first class started at 8 am.
On my way to school I had continued stomach discomfort, but I put it off to first day of school jitters or worry that I'd be late.
During class, I started to feel severe discomfort, and I left class several times to use the washroom, but nothing seemed to alleviate the pain. I even forced myself to vomit, thinking the pain may have been caused by something I ate, but my stomach was virtually empty of all but bile, and so I returned to class to wait it out.
I thought for a few minutes that maybe I had pancreatitis again, though the pain from my first bout of it hadn't been that bad.
At one point, I thought I might pass out. I put my head down on my desk, and after about 15 minutes, the pain and discomfort, and the shaking of my hands, had stopped. I felt almost ok, and so I went to find the building where my next class was. While walking around campus, I noticed that I had a less severe pain, but that it was very localised to my lower right abdomen. I called my sister to ask her if she would look up the symptoms of appendicitis, and described what had happened that morning. She read back to me exactly the same, and advised me to go to the hospital.
Instead, I went to the clinic on campus where they confirmed that I had a low-grade fever and that, because there were no doctors on campus at the time, I should go to the hospital. I was very upset, because it was my first day of school, but I went nonetheless.
As I walked to my car I called my mom and left her a voice mail telling her what had happened, and I almost started crying.
Thankfully, I was already in Oakville, so I checked myself into emerg and began the 5-hour process of diagnosing what I had suspected already: APPENDICITIS!
I had surgery Monday evening, at about 8 pm. The surgeon told me that my appendix was 'good and inflamed' and that, had I waited any longer to come in, it would likely have ruptured.
I stayed in the hospital until Wednesday morning, when I was discharged to my mom's care, and have been here ever since. I'll be returning to school Monday, barring any unforseen health crises.
I'm healing well, but I've had to put my weight-loss on hold because I can't work out because I have three new incisions in my abdomen!! YIKES!
