Well I tore my ACL a few years ago playing soccer. I was told by a doctor that the ACL is like an elastic and it starts to wear away after a while. Some people tear it some people don't. It helps when you warm-up and stretch before you play sports. This helps in preventing injuries.
I have not had surgery because I am not playing sports competitively. However, I have been strenghtening the muscles around the injured knee. I do variations of bodyweight squats, lunges and burpees. While the muscles around the injured knee has contracted somewhat the knee is in the best shape it has been since the injury.
My advise would be the warm-up and stretch before physical activity. Anyone has any other suggestions?
