Anyone used Kelp?

Ok so in february I was diagnosed hypothyroid and one of the things I read was that Kelp is suppose to be really beneficial for the thyroid.

So today when I was at the store picking up my protein supplement (which was more money than I expected it to be $30.00 for 400g) I started talking with the lady at the store who was actually quite helpful. I bought "Ocean Wonders 100% Natural Sea Kelp" to add to my protein shake.

Anyone have any experience with adding Kelp to their diet?

WHFoods: Sea vegetables

Sea vegetables
Western cultures are only recently beginning to enjoy the taste and nutritional value of sea vegetables, often referred to as seaweed, that have been a staple of the Japanese diet for centuries. Numerous various varieties of sea vegetables can be found in health food and specialty stores throughout the year. Owing to their rise in popularity, they are also becoming much easier to find in local supermarkets as well.

Sea vegetables can be found growing both in the marine salt waters as well as in fresh water lakes and seas. They commonly grow on coral reefs or in rocky landscapes, and can grow at great depths provided that sunlight can penetrate through the water to where they reside since, like plants, they need light for their survival. Sea vegetables are neither plants nor animals but classified in a group known as algae

I personally prefer seaweed dried and wrapped around raw fish or in a seaweed salad :)

the benefits section of the above website gives a lot of good reasons to eat sea vegetables
I'm a little skeptical of packaged products that claim the wonders of the real thing though

If you're on any type of medication for your thyroid condition.. do hceck with your doctor before adding any supplements...

Kelp is suppose to be really beneficial for the thyroid.

Kelp is a natural source of iodine, which your thyroid uses to produce hormones needed to keep your body functioning.

USAian table salt is iodized by default. Yogurt and cow's milk are also good sources of iodine. Iodine deficiency (goiter) is not common in the Western Hemisphere.

An excess of iodine can trigger hypothyroidism.

Nope never used it. You got totally ripped on the protein though. What kind did you buy?

Prairie Naturals Fermented Soy-Force

So I got ripped...well I'll have to look around to a few other places and see what I can find. Also that is in canadian dollars...everything here costs more than in the US so keep that in mind!

I take kelp every morning. If I don't take it, I see the difference straight away.
I swear by it. I have put many of my friends and family onto it.

Kelp, green tea, water, raw veges, brown rice and seafood is my main diet. I have had two children and kept my figure. So I'm doing something right.

You may want to visit the thyroid forum on the about.com site hosted by Mary Shomon.

Kelp is a highly debated treatment for thyroid. Some people swear it works and some say it is dangerous. Mostly because it is believed that our diets here in the USA are actually too high in iodine, therefore leading to hypothyroidism.

I've never put that much time into research on that end, with the Kelp and the Coconut Oil , Guggul, Hoodia, the list goes on over there.

I mostly just researched the process of the thyroid hormones (can you believe my cholesterol was once 405!) and I wanted Armour Thyroid added to my synthroid so my body could get some T3 going again. I have Hashimoto's. I had it for a minimum of 10 years before even being diagnosed. I still feel like crap from time to time, like today my face, especially my eyes just feel very "puffy". LOTS of my problems vanished after introducing the Armour, but my labs are still not quite right yet. I still have hair falling out and can't get these last 22 lbs off. Are you on meds?

yep I was put on synthroid right away and finally my labs came back good so I've been at this dose for a couple months now.

but I recently went back on birth control and I've heard some mixed things about taking it with synthroid. It's been a month and I have noticed that I've started feeling really tired again .... tired like I was before starting synthroid ... so I've started to wonder if I really should take them at opposite times of the day.

and yes I do consult my dr. about things..she's been kinda dingy since diagnosing my thyroid (which i had to request be tested) so I'm in the process of finding a new dr.

The way my Dr.

explained it to me is that the reproductive hormones are binding hormones, and can block the thyroid hormones from getting into the cells and unlocking the mitochondria cells. He didn't go into much more detail, but I guess it ties in with birth control in some form or another.

I am not sure if taking it at different times of the day will help, since this is an ongoing process, really. It certainly wouldn't hurt to try.

When you find a new doctor, you may want to ask for the FT3 to be tested also. A lot of the dr's worship the TSH and sometimes FT4 will be done. Also, don't know if you have run into this brick wall, but the reference ranges are just ranges. Most people with hypo feel good high up in the FT4 and FT3 range and at the very low end of the TSH range. For the first 4 years after being diagnosed, they just kept telling me everything came back normal. Walking around feeling like death is not normal.

And good for you for listening to your body. Some dr's don't know to test because they don't realize how very common it really is; they only know to throw you a case of sleeping pills or antidepressants when you say you aren't feeling well. Because of the changes going on with the reference ranges, the number of people being diagnosed is climbing higher and higher.

I maleficent's info. Check with your doc. I have hypothyroid too, an take levoxyl. In my case when I asked my endocrinologist about kelp he said it wouldn't really impact things for me very much either way, but everyone's different.

Good luck!
