Any swimmers in here?

I've decided I want to start swimming!
I'm a little confused as to its benefits, however.
I've been told swimming is great for improving your CV, but will accomplish very little as far as losing weight is concerned.
For the record, I'm referring to swimming in lanes using proper and intense strokes/techniques (front crawl, back crawl, butterfly, etc.). not freestyle.
If you have any information, experiences, etc., please share!

Swimming is cardio. Cardio burns calories, therefore it's good if you want to lose weight.

It's also the cardio exercise that's easiest on your joints, and because it involves your whole body, it actually burns more calories in the same time than other exercises.

For example - during my half hour swim (fast, constant swim), I burn roughly 650 calories. To achieve the same burn on the treadmill, I would have to walk at about 5% incline, at at least 5 mph, for about 45 minutes.

So it's definitely quite beneficial to weight loss. :)

Oh that's a very interesting thing to do for loosing weight because Just walking is not the solution for the weight loss problem. Swimming will keep you physically fit as it is considered as a complete exercise and your cardio will also be keep fit by this exercise.

Thanks for the inpout so far, :).
Another reason I want to get into swimming is because (for some reason), it's very difficult for me.
I can run for 45 mins @ a fast pace with little difficulty, but swimming 2 lengths will make my arms/legs ache.
I've always been a weak swimmer so I figured tackling the exercise that is hardest for me will produce better results.
Also, I find my lower body is so bulky... Like it needs to be stretched excessively... 15 mins of floor exercises/day isn't going to fix it.
Anyone else feel like this?

I love swimming. It's a good alternative to any cardio exercises that involves minimizing the impact on your joints. Also good for people with scoliosis.

I had the same experience with aching. I couldn't last 50 meters without my arms giving out. Proper form and swimming often will reduce those aches.
