Any runners here?

I have been running off and on for 4 years now and it used to be so easy...now that I have put on extra pounds it is definately harder for me and can't seem to do it at all without feeling like I'm going to fall out - literally.

2 years ago I was in super good shape - thin, eating right, etc. and was running 40 miles per week (training for a half marathon). I'd like to start running again, but walking seems like it's getting the best of me for now. It is CRAZY how fast our bodies and endurance gets shot straight to hell once we slack off a little bit....or in my case....quite a bit.

I guess once I get a few pounds off of me and continue a daily walking routine, by body will coorporate and let me run it gradually soon.

Yeah....need to slowly add up the speed after slacking off for a while. i just started running again after stopping for a year.
i m using the treadmill now, going up to speed of 8.0. not sure when that will increase lol....
i dun like running outdoors though, cos it hurt my knees too much.

hope u get back into yr previous shape soon...sounds awesome.;)

Thanks pinkydolly. -What a cute name & pic BTW. ;)
Yea, I'd love a treadmill, but not exactly in my budget right now. Maybe Santa will bring one for Christmas. :D
I know what you mean about the hurting knees and all. I tore a ligament a couple of years back playing softball and I have had the same issues starting out running again. It always goes away after a couple of days though except for in the winter...it seems to linger forever.

Yappy, if you took your training so seriously a few years ago, you'll be back in the thick of it in no time.

I used to be a jogger, nothing serious, no races. With the added weight, and getting unfit, it really was difficult for me at first. But I've slowly gone from walking to jogging these past few months. I go every day.

You know if you push the walking and then running, the pounds will come off faster and you'll feel fitter every week.

Make a plan for the next month or two. Find a 5k to do. Even with extra weight, you'll do well. Just wait until you start getting those feelings you used to get when you were running serious.

Don't get trapped into comparing against your old times. Time where you are now and improve from there.

Good luck!

On self.com they have a great program " go from walking to running in four weeks " I didn't run at all and after 4 week i can do 30 minutes straight. Week one is something like walks normal 1 min. walk fast 1 min. jog 1 min.
2nd week kicks up to 1 min. walk 3 min. jog.. It realy helps build up your endurance.

I am also getting into the jogging thing again. I started jogging after I had my first child and lost 25lbs by doing it. Now I just had my sencond child and I want to get back at it. My knees are killing me right now, so I am off to get some new runners tomorrow and hopefully that will do the trick.

Anyways off to power walk! Hopefully we will both be running in no time!

I play football so i need to run. but ounce u start you get used to it, now i have a leg enjurry so ive been out, and will be, but when i start again i can imagine how hard its gonna be for me to.

I used to run alot and ran a couple half marathons myself. These days I would rather ride a bike than run, but I still do run sometimes. I've found that the quickest way to develop speed and stamina in your running is to kind of interval train. I guess it would be simialr to HIIT in principle. Jog at a pace that you can sustain for a long distance and after you get good and warmed up, sprint at 90% for 20 seconds (adjust time for your own ability), then slow down again until you catch your breath. After you catch your breath, sustain that slower pace for a couple minutes then sprint again for a set amount of time or distance. Do that through your entire run for a few weeks, then go back to a normal run and you will be blown away. After just a few weeks you should be able to run noticably further at a slightly faster pace. It works wonders for me.
