Hi, this is my first post here. My name is Tabitha and I wanted to ask if anyone had any ideas on how I can lose weight/tone up when I am bedbound. I can not work out or even lift weights because of a disease I have that makes moving very very painful. I can not even do any walking. I know the only way for me to slim down is through diet, but I have a hard time with eating because the pain makes me very nauseous. I'm a vegan so I'm not eating all kinds of bad foods. But I can only eat when the nausea eases up. I think its the lack of a eating schedule and lack of food and moving in general that is keeping me fat. Any ideas on what I can do/eat? I can't stand being trapped in this body and not being able to do anything to change it! Thank you:)

Hi Tabitha, and welcome. I'm so sorry to hear about your health issues. I can see why you would feel helpless in your situation, but we are never REALLY helpless; we just have to put our heads together and work something out.

I'm a bit worried about giving specific advice since I don't know exactly what disease you have or what meds, if any, you are talking. But I do know that you need to move all you can--if you can't lift weights, lift your arm. If you can't do that, just move it back and forth on the bid, your legs, too.

As for food, I guess the real question is whether this is a disease you will recover from or a chronic condition. If you will recover, I'd tend to think you might want to wait until you are able to keep more food down before you worry too much about dieting.

Another thing: if you are taking any kind of meds, ask your doctor if any of them cause weight gain or inhibit weight loss. Sometimes a simple shift in meds can make things much better.

While you are at it, discuss the nausea with him. Might the meds cause that? Or may some combination of meds and suplements or vitamins? If not, try ginger in any form. It's wonderful for upset stomachs.

Keep posting. As we get to know you and your situation, maybe we can find something that will work for you.

Silver Sonnet,

That was a great reply to Tabitha. Yeah Tabitha, I agree with Silver Sonnet.
I guess it's what finding out what you are capable of and what effect the meds have on you. Sometimes it's just doing what you can until your body recovers to a point where you could more in the way of eating style and exercise.
Your in my thoughts,

xerox hey there. I was off my back for almost two years. I know what your talking about. between the pain meds and not moving and nausia here i am about 200lbs heavier than i should be. I forget the name of the exercise but you can take a towel and do tension exercises. Im not gonna lie its gonna hurt because your muscles have gotten so relaxed its hard to get them moving again. Talk to your dr and they should give you something for nausia. I dont know your condition but there are ways around everything. Its hard to explain to people about the constant pain unless you have been through it. But you seem to know about it going through it now. I cant tell you to work through the pain because if your at level 9 or 10 the last thing you want to put yourself through is working out. some medications will cause weight gain. If your on anykind of steriods medication they will norm pack the fat on. Im not sure why they do but when they gave them to me for my back i really started to balloon up.Other medications will do this as well but thats what they had me on so thats why i used the example of that medication. so work with your dr and anything else im always around. I have found real support with this group. you can talk to your family and friends but unless they have been there its never the same...... good luck to you..........Lee
