Hi there,

So tomorrow, my boyfriend would like me to go down to the gym with him and sign up. While I am trying to get healthier and would LOVE a place to be able to work out, since our apartment is tiny, and its absolutely freezing outside, I find myself really not wanting to do it.

I'm really nervous about going! I know it sounds really silly, but 1st of all, I'm worried I'll look silly since I don't know how to use the equipment, I'm afraid people will think I look disgusting with all my bits jiggling in front of them, I'm scared that I'll look pathetic if I cant run for even 10 mins on the treadmill, and, to be honest, I'm nervous about working about with my boyfriend as well, actually, for the same reasons listed above.

Has anyone ever felt like this? Any suggestions?

*EDIT* And ahh crap i spelled Anxiety wrong -_-

You could do the classes at the gym instead of using the equipment. That way you could stand at the back of the room and no one will see when you stuff up. Once you get a bit fitter and more confident you won't mind other people so much.

The other thing you could do is get some workout dvds to do at home. I know you said that you only have a small amount of space, but some of them you can literally do on the spot as long as you have enough space to lie down if there is floor work involved. I much prefer working out at home cause I get very distracted by other people when I am at the gym. I don't feel like I am really having that good a workout if I am constantly watching how I look and whether I am puffing too much etc.

The gym is not full of super fit people who look fantastic and know what they are doing!

It's full of a whole range of people, a few fit ones who know what they are doing and a whole lot of people who are muddling their way through trying to get a bit fitter and, in many cases, trying to lose some weight.

I wouldn't worry too much about what people you don't know may or may not think about you.

Maybe try a reconnaisance visit and check out for yourself the type of people who are at the gym! And gym equipment is not complex and there are plenty of people who will be happy to show you how to use it (including onsite trainers).

And to be honest mostly people are too busy doing what they are doing to worry about you. Sure, there are always some smart a** people making judgements but they exist everywhere in life and they have no friends anyway! :rotflmao:

before you join can you get a few free day passes? thats what happened when I joined my gym, i joined to go swimming, and have those da passes enabled me to see if i would feel comfortable there. I get what you mean tho, I am a lot better now hoever and i realise people arent looking at me and are just getting on with whatever they are doing themselves. I dont do weights tho, im terrified of going into that area of the gym.

the gym I belonged to a couple years ago wasnt so bad. I had the same anxiety and quit a few more. including embarrassing myself being a guy and not being able to lift very much weight. not being able to run. After going a few days I realized there were people of all sizes there and 99% of them could care less about you. everyone there is there to work out and do their own thing and try and meet their own goals. once you realize this its not so bad. The fact that your even there shows that your trying to do something about your health. which is more then most. no one will give you a hard time for that.
