Hi everyone, my name is Mandy and I was recently diagnosed as having rheumatoid arthritis. In talking to my doctor we agreed I should be looking at making lifestyle changes to better myself and my future as I deal with this disease. I'm a 32 year old woman currently measuring 5' tall and 220lb. My weight is definitely an issue, but even before my diagnosis of RA I was slowly making progress towards a better lifestyle. Over the past several months I dropped 29lb simply by dropping soda. My soda intake was rediculously high. At my peak I was drinking 4 or 5 cans daily! Now I'm cutting sweets out of my diet and other fatty foods as well as exercising. I just purchased a treadmill a week ago and have been walking. I started at about 2.5 miles per hour for 30-45 minutes, but the past few times I've really pushed myself and did 3mph at a 3.5% incline for a full hour, sometimes slightly longer. According to the treadmill that's good for burning 400 calories. I'm not sure how accurate that is, but 400 calories burned is now my goal. For foods I start out eating a Nutrigrain bar, followed by two packets of oatmeal an hour or so later, that's followed by a handful of nuts (peanuts or walnuts), then I have lunch which has been a Smart Ones frozen meal, and for an afternoon snack I've been having a can of pineapple. For dinner it changes, but I've been trying to eat light and no more midnight snacks! I'm guessing my food intake is around 1000-1200 calories mattering on what I have for dinner.
So anyway, that's my story for now. I'm excited to be making these changes and excited to see the pounds come off. I'm hoping for much more success and to learn more about caring for myself.
