My user name, Lagniappe, is a common expression in my hometown of New Orleans. It means "a little something extra." Right now, I have way too much "extra" and that's why I'm here.

Having browsed the site for the past couple of days I thought I'd go ahead and sign up. I've been really impressed by the progress a lot of you have made in losing weight -- and impressed by your drive and determination. At this point I'm feeling very positive, but I'm sure as time goes on I'll have my good days and bad -- the support of this site will surely be helpful.

By way of a little intro, I'm 48, mother of 3 ranging from 3 to 18, and in the past 8 years my weight has ballooned from 140 to 206. I'm only 5 ft tall so you can imagine what I look like. A blimp with legs. I've struggled a little with my weight since my mid-30s but never dreamed I would end up this big. I blame a very bad diet, too much junk food, not enough exercise. No discipline. My lowest of many low points came this summer, when my 18 year old daughter wanted me to take a picture with her, and I avoided it. If I died tomorrow, there would be very little photographic evidence of my existence in the past 20 years.

My goal is to lose 60 to 80 lbs, feel better and improve my stamina -- and be more fun. I'm not thinking of this as a diet, but a new lifestyle. I've started keeping a food journal and writing down everything that touches my lips, avoiding sweets, high GI carbs, eating more vegetables and lean protein, and have started walking and moderate exercise. I've lost 5 lbs in the first week, and feeling encouraged, but I know I have a long, long way to go.

So, thanks for being here and I'll see you around, I'm sure :)

First off... welcome to the WLF. Congrats on starting up a new lifestyle. You may want to take a look at all stickied threads and read through them in their entirety. They hold a lot of fitness and nutrion information that will allow you to make your journey even easier. Also... if you like, start yourself a food journal/ diary. It will give other members a chance to drop in and motivate/ support you while you're here. Wishing you all the best, girly....
