Another flat stomach query

Hello,

Sorry to post on acommon topic but...

I have been doing some form of training or another for the past 2.5 years and id like to be able to get a flat stomach... doesnt need to be defined, just flat... Im quite happy with the rest of my body at the moment.

At the moment i go to gym twice per week (which incorporates cardio and weight training) i also play...cough... mixed netball... cough... twice per week in my girlfriends team.

In terms of diet, it kinda varies... during the week i eat pretty well... plenty of meat & vegetables which are cooked with little if any oils/fats etc... i also eat plenty of fruit...
The weekend can be a different story as i dont mind having a beer or three but generally i dont go overboard.

I have had this dreaded spare tyre for as long as i can remember... really want to get rid of it...
Will i need to do more weight/cardio training? Will execises that target this area only help

Here are my stats:

28 years old
male
5'10
76 kg
Bodyfat - unknown

Hope to hear from someone soon

Spot training doesn't work.
Cardio does :)

When you say you go to the gym and do workouts which incorporate cardio, what exactly do you do and for how long?

Some exercises (like jogging) burn calories more aggressively than others.

I also don't think it'd hurt to have more discipline on the weekends? I usually love the weekends, because unlike weekdays there's a lot more time to cook healthy meals (especially in the morning when I''m not in a rush), and there's a heck of a lot of time to do Cardio, so I just go on bike rides lasting hours.

I more often than not jump on the exercise bike for about 15 - 20 minutes...

It can be tough... mainly when im with friends... if im having a quite one at home im generally pretty well disciplined... maybe i'll have to abstain for a while

If you're going to make a change...

If you're going to make a change make it something you can stick to. Otherwise you'll yo-yo. Make sure that if you're going to cut back on drinking it's an amount that you can live with. Don't forget that you need to be realistic.

Well I'd say that's half your problem.

15-20 minutes you say? Well that's a bit more than the usual amount of time it even takes for the aerobic energy systems to kick in - this system is in fact what you want supplying your body with energy, as it's primary source of fuel is stored fat (& complex carbs), which is as I understand exactly what you want to get rid of.

Prior to that system there are two others (can't remember names sorry), which use more readily available sources of fuel such as sugar and do not burn off any fat. They are used for short periods of time. But once the aerobic system kicks in, it's the final energy system your body has, and can supply you with energy for ever, and will burn off all that fat.

So you should exercise for longer than 15-20 mins. How do you feel about one hour? It doesn't have to be overly intense either.
