Ankle and Wrist weights

I saw some ankle and wrist weights on sale and was very tempted to buy them...
Was just wondering if anyone had any opinion on them... good idea? Waste of money?
I thought they might be good because I don't really do any weight training at all atm and I could wear them when I went running or just during the day and it might help me reduce my bf%?
Also I have slightly dodgy knees -could ankle weights put extra strain on them?
Maybe I should just get wrist weights?
Or would it be much better to use the machines at the gym...? This just seemed like a good way of doing it without taking up more time + I hate the gym and would much rather be running :)
Anyway, thoughts would be very much appreciated!

I've not used them myself, but I'm fascinated by them. I used to watch Dragon Ball Z all the time, and those characters trained with weighted clothing. I don't think they're any substitute for "proper" weight training, but it could be an interesting experiment to see if keeping the weights on all week makes things easier, or something like that.

I personally think it's a bad idea to do anything with those on your body. I use them to add a little weight when I don't have the next size up dumbbell but that is all. I never walk with them. I don't think it's going to build a lot of muscle either.

Yea, it won't replace weight training.

At best you'll expend a little more energy since during cardio you're moving around slightly more weight. But I don't think the benefits are worth the thought.

most orthopedists will tell you that walking/runnign with weights in your hands is a bad idea as it can throw off your natural alignment...

I used them when I was pregnant. I would put the ankle ones on and go walking. It felt pretty good for the most part but I haven't used them since cause I run now instead of walk.

We used to use them during our waterpolo training when we did leg lifts. It was more of an ease of use thing since its hard to balance weight on the ankle when lifting them.

We also use weighted belts when we swam to help build stamina.
