Hi i'm a 54 year old female...started my new journey yesterday....been down this road before as most of us has. Always been overweight. Ten years ago (44) i lost 190 pounds in about ayear...did that on my own and the reason was i became addicted to exercise..it just melted off it. I ate healthy and exercised. My problem this time around is (at least in the beginning) is going to be the exercise. Absoulty no real health problems except artiritis..but it has been a rough year. I weighed in yesterday at 366.6. It is diffucult just to get moving ..period.... I have a nice elpitical here at home but the most i can do it about 2-3 minutes. Yesterday and today i did that in the moring and afternoon. Any suggestions of things i could start off slow with?

Ellipticals are one of the lowest impact exercises going so stick with it if you can (try leaving off the arm element and see if that helps)

If it's still early days don't worry about only managing 2-3 minutes, Just to to improve a little each time and maybe slow your pace until you can sustain the level of activity.

If you've been using it for a while without improvement try to narrow down why you run out of steam.

Do your muscles get tired, are you breathing heavily or is your pulse racing when you finish?

Hey smilin, welcome! Like Tourny said, don't worry about only managing a few minutes at first. I've had clients say that they're never going to get back onto an elliptical because they tire out too fast, then eventually they can do 30 mins or more :) Stick with it and you'll likely improve!

Thanks muchhh for ur encourgement you two!!!!. Was one week on the 5th and my total loss was 17.4 pounds...boy do i feel better getting all that water off me. Your support helped keep me working on the elliptcal...today i did almost 5 minutes i know it sounds corny but in one week the difference is amazing. Thanks so much for your encourgement.

hi smilin!

I read your post in another thread, that is a lot of weight to drop between the 28th of Dec and Jan 6th, WOW!!!!! Can I ask what your diet is? and how many calories you consume daily?

I'm in a similar boat with the elliptical. Not quite the same, but similar. You're in your 50s, much older than me, so props there for still being able to get on that thing! I used to go on about 40 minutes easy, just a few months ago. then I stopped working out and now I'm struggling with just 10 minutes! I'm only 23. But I think it's because I haven't been active for so long, that my body will take a little bit to get used to it. But keep at it daily, even if it's a few minutes! Eventually you'll start going a few more minutes. What also helps me is when it really gets to be TOO much instead of just stopping and giving up, I walk around my basement for 15-20 minutes while listening to my ipod, then I get back on the treadmill. You can also mess with resistance settings!

I really salute your effort and resolve! Good luck, know you can do it!

Thanks Success! Since i started my diet consists of lean meats, fruits, vegatables, egg w/one slice diet bread and yogurt. I cut out the diet mt. dew completely (which i thought might be the hardest thing). My daily calories are usually around 1100 and i do drink at leastttt a gallon of water day (which i have never been able to do on other diets) I have never had a problem dropping the weight (when ive set my mind to it) its the maintaining. So this time i go into it with a new outlook...that this the way to eat THE REST OF MY LIFE. The thing is as i type this i realize thats not a bad thing ..i'm eating right...i'm eating good things..im not hungry...ohhh sure i WANT to eat the bad things....but ive felt so misrable for the last 3-4 years theres NO way i'll cheat. It doesnt hurt to get out of a chair ..or walk across the room..little things that is hard for some to understand. Btw i'm a loner when it comes to exercising or talking aout my weight so when i found this site i thought it might be good for me....i was right..it feels food to express yourself here. I loved your idea of walking after my exercise it might just be the trick to regaining my stamnia too!! Your'e young and movitated...do this for you and your future....dont get me wrong i have a wonderful life husband 2 great kids a 2 year old grandson, but i have missed out on so much.... it would be my honor to help inspire you to live your live to the FULLEST!!!!

AHi smilin, thanks for coming by my diary, your words of encouragement and support were so kind. I honesty though just giving up and today I made a bad choice for breakfast and was so close to writing off this day as a bad one and starting again another. That us until I read the wonderful words of support u and others left on my diary so I'm going to make chicken fajitas for a late lunch and won't eat again the rest of the day as I'm going to the cinema later and will either need to have dinner real early or really really late so I'll have a late lunch and if I'm hungry later will have a slice of toast. I'm just about to get up off my fat ass and walk the 7miles to my bf house. So thank u again, if it wasn't.for the great comments on my diary I'd have given up on today.

I hope ur having a great day yourself. Stick at the epileptical if all u can manage is 3mins stick with that and then next week go for 4 and so on and before u know it you're exercise regime will put me to shame.
Keep in touch x

Thanks everyone. Had a good day or night..lol i work friday saturday and sundays 12 hours shifts so itl be hard for me to get on here but for a few seconds on those days. I do really look forward to seeing how everyone is doing. It's the weekend so try extra hard to stick with it ....WE CAN DO THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

today...well wednesday marked my second week. I lost 4.6 pounds. So far all is going great...i know from past experiences you just gotta get it in your head...once its there your battle is almost overcome...lol well you know what i mean. YAY!!!!!!! 22 pounds in 2 weeks. I know sounds like alot but the first week was only water and when your very heavy like me its not hard to lose alot in a week as it is someone of a smaller size. I have been eating right (fruits, vegtables ,yogurt , eggs) and trying to exercise some ( i need to do more) but hoping that will come as i lose some of this weight. Thank you all for your your comments...i love coming by and reading it helps keep me movitated. One night was rough so i just typed in weight loss before and after photos and checked em out....got me throught the evening.

Nice! 4.6 pounds! Congrats!

Just going back to a previous post, you said that you're currently eating about 1100 calories per day.... do you know how many calories per day you were eating before?

Oh my lawd i couldnt even image..best guess would be most days 3000-5000 and im sure many days even more.

I've done this to myself..i make no excuses. Now just to figure out WHY i've done this. I havent come up with that yet. We all have problems past and present..i'm no different than most. But I really don't know why i let myself become this way. From posts i read this is something i need to work out but not sure where to begin with the why's. Any suggestions?

Oh added a picture today.....i'm the one one the left if you didnt know (hahahaha). And just decided my final picture will be with the same friend here. Can't wait to post that one. My weekend work sch. starts today so good luck everyone!!!
