Am I ready.

Ok...long story short...in a year i went from 251lbs to now about 168. Im a 6ft tall male. I have weighed up to 273 in my life. Its all messed me up mentally and I have a problem. I want to gain muscle and lose fat, but unfortunately you cant do both. I didnt believe it but for the past 6 months i have seen no progress excersizing and eating right, but a normal amount of calories. My question is, I dont want to be a huge body builder guy, I just want to be a little stronger and look better, am I ready for this or should i still try to lose some more fat first. I attatched pictures of myself. You can see the loose skin on me thats really messing with me. I lift weight all the time but i see no progress. I eat at least 80% healthy food (once a week i go out and have a good time), but I eat a lot of it. Should I go for high calorie now. Keep in mind I just wanna look better. IF i put on 10lbs, will it help....I dont think i can convince myself to put on more than that.....its just hard...i never wanna go back to what i was.

Id say on a normal day i have like 2700 calories. I lift 3x a week with 2-3x a wek 30min or so of cardio.

Are you...ready? To what, gain weight? Weight gained by muscle looks and feels entirely different than fat weight. So I would say yes. I have a feeling that the more muscle you put on, the better you'll feel.

You're going to need more calories than 2700, for a 6 ft male. If you're lifting and exercising, what you eat will help build muscle. I am like 160 and shorter than you, and I consume more than that. You probably understand that caloric deficits that are too small lead to catabolism, and thus hinders muscle development, so yes. You need more calories.

just increase your cals by 200 a day and see how it goes ,if you start to gain fat drop down again,as leiyunfat said your cals may be to low causing your body to hold onto fat by slowing your metabolism down.
 
just to give you an idea, i'm 29, 5'9", and about 19% bodyfat (and shedding more).
I'm losing fat on a 2,200 calorie a day diet. so my maintenance to stay 182lbs is probably about 2,700 cals. which means that's no where near enough for a guy 3 inches taller than me who's trying to add muscle.

I do think you're ready to add muscle. you've been dieting a long time...I'm sure your body and mind are ready for a change in gears.

go for a clean bulk, to minimize fat gains while you pack on muscle.

show us your daily diet, and workout routines...its possible your routine is fine and its just the diet...its possible the routine needs work, or that you work the muscles too often or not often enough.

Well the thing is i was never really trying to gain much muscle....I still feel like I have more weight to lose. I was just lifting lightly. i have a friend whos got what i consider perfect to what I would like to be and hes gonna help me out.

My fear was that im basically still too fat, but my arms are like toothpicks. Its mostly loose skin but theirs fat there too. I just wanna look good or rather ok with my shirt off. :( i guess and Ive been losing for so long im afraid ill go back.
 
well, muscle mass burns calories. fat does not. i'm not saying "go get huge like a bodybuilder"...i'm saying "put on some lean muscle mass so your body requires more calories. get active...get physical".

otherwise you can try to keep dieting the rest of your life and always worry that any slip up will cause fat gain becaues you don't have enough muscle mass to burn off the occasional half pizza or quart of ice cream.

you don't look fat to me. you look a bit scrawny, with loose skin on your stomach. skin takes a while to shrink after significant fat loss. it can be helpful to replace the fat with lean muscle mass to fill it back in.

look at it this way: try my idea of putting on some muscle for 6 weeks. and give it an honest try.
watch your weight gain, and get a skinfold bodyfat test. knowing both weight and bodyfat means you know how many pounds of fat are on you, so when your weight changes, you can tell if its fat weight, or 'other weight' (muscle, or water).

at the end of 6 weeks, decide if it was a good idea or not. since you monitored weight, you'll know if you're bulking too fast and thus putting on too much fat, and can taper calories back a little to fix it.

its just 6 weeks. a drop in the bucket of time that'll make up your entire life. you can afford 6 weeks to try something different if it might ultimately be of great benefit to you, can't you?
