Am i Losing muscle here?

I run about 3 days a week, about 5 miles. I do the run at a very high paced speed and include sprints and stairs. I am concerned that i am going to lose muscle mass, is this going to happen? I Lift 4 days a week, full body. I lift for about an hour, i lift very hard and heavy. Is this a good combo, my cardio and my heavy lifting? Or am i losing muscles doing this?, hope not!

While diet is also an issue, no I don't think you're losing muscle mass because of the heavy lifting. heavy lifting gives your body a reason to keep the muscle around. do you run a total of 5 miles or 5 miles each time? I'd just do 3 fbws a week btw.

I don't tihnk your'e losing muscles, but I don't think the running will help you bulk up (if that is your goal) if your goal is to lose weight, then a deficient diet along with your current exercise should be fine for that and the lifting will help make any muscle loss minimal.

ok. I am actually trying to cut a few pounds, but at the same time, i really do not want to lose any muscle mass, which is why i lift heavy. My diet is good, i eat healthy. And i am running between 4 to 5 miles each time i run. Like i said, my major concern is that i am losing muscle mass by running, but i feel i need to improve my cardio because i practice mma and cardio is a must.

(with all respect) how am i supposed to know if you are losing muscle or not?
chances are that your losing some muscle. everyone loses SOME muscle when they cut weight.

i hope your not lifting too hard or too heavy. you have to be aware of your central nervous system and amount of muscle fatigue especially because you are on a caloric deficit(im assuming you are).

theres nothing wrong with doing cardio 3 days a week

if you are eating too little of anything, there are many ways you can be losing muscle. diet is key.

From what I understand as long as you continue to lift heavy and up your protein intake then you should not lose any muscle at all. However you may want to get clarification form one of the gurus here.

Contrary to what quite a lot of people beleive, you DONT use protein during resistance training, or at least you shouldnt (may be due to poor diet etc). The reason you take protein after is for the maintaining, regenerating and repairing the of muscle.

Likewise, as long as your consuming a good diet you wont be losing any lean body mass in your cardio workout, unless your running 50 plus minutes.

The only thing i would suggest is to do your weights every second day, which works out to be around 3 days a week, you want to allow your muscles to repair themselves ecspecially since your including some pretty intense cardio..

I generally agree with Matt. I always put cardio on non-weight training days, but if i must cardio train and weight train on the same day I'll split them (one am and one pm) so I have maximum rest between sessions.

Cardio does catabolize (eat away at) muscle, but because you are trying to lean up the cardio will help you achieve that goal. Very few body builders will do much, if any cardio, for that very reason. I'm guessing your not a bodybuilder. You'll likely lose some size, as PB said above as you would with any cutting routine. It's a give and take. If you're not willing to get a little fat around the midsection, you really can't bulk up, if you're not willing to sacrifice a bit of size it is hard to cu tup.

I would drop the long distance cardio and do HIIT for 16 minutes instead. This will burn much less muscle (if any at all) and continue burning fat even after the workout.

And yes, if you are truly cutting you will lose some strength (muscle).
