So here's the thing - I used to be heavy, Very Heavy. Lets just say I was more than 1/4 ton (500lbs+) at age 20, height 6'4.5''.
But I'm past that! Sort of..[Now Age 25]
See, Maintaining really is a b****. Its a balance of working out and dieting (Not really, Stick around and I'll show you what I mean).
So where am I now? Well I was at 225lbs, but I'll be honest now I'm a SOLID 260lbs. Why? Some would say, I got a job -- I sit in an office -- I'm less active. Pffttt... please. I eat and I eat.
Some people reading might think -- whats the big deal you are up from 225 to 260 (+35lbs) -- if you really did lose all that weight, just do it again. Well that's the thing. I always used to say 250lb was my limit -- at 250lb the gloves would come off and I would "get serious" well that was 10lbs ago and it seems to be getting worse. 90% of statistics are made-up on the spot, but I think I read something like 95% of people who lose considerable amounts of weight relapse. Hence, I'm trying to prevent it but also live my life. [Life is short]
This diary will be a journey through my philosophy of food, dieting, and exercise.
I also also give you a summation of what I ate and how much those fancy gym machines claim I burned.
I really hope this does get some attention from others -- and if you do find support in it, please let me know - it will encourage me to write more.
Pictures of me? Not Yet. I will either have to have an large audience or I can share them with you privately.

Today was the typical day -- the reason why I started my blog in the first place. I went to the gym -- Had a heck of a workout.. but who cares. I clearly out ate my workout.
What did I eat:
Some Cereal - 220 Calories
Candy - Going to Call it 120 Calories
Chipotle Burrito Bowl - Going to Call it 800 (didnt eat all)
Taco Bell Fresco Soft Tacos (3) - Call it 600
Snickers Ice Cream - 180
Soft Pretzel - 160
Peanut Butter - 190
Bread - 80
-----------
Total: 2350
Goal: 1700
Overage: 650
Approximately how much I burned at Gym (Over one hour, Various Cardio): 600-700
So in otherwords, Lots of work at the gym -- But at the end of the day I didn't come out ahead because of my eating.
So Why do I do this to myself.. I know what I have to do -- Hell I've done it before.. Why can I never seem to be the balance type of person -- its always one extreme or the other with eating -- I either eat 2500-3500 calories or I eat 1300 -- Its a very troubling personality -- I'm sure many people can share my frustration.
It is my hope that by writing and reflecting on days like today I can find the strength to say no to the burrito bowl at Chipotle or the misc garbage I've been eating. I have to get this under control.. Have to. The gym is not going to solve my problems..
I remember when I was losing all of the weight before (I lost roughly 280-290lb from high to low) people asked me how important exercise was (I didn't exercise for the first 200lbs lost) -- and I always say -- "It really isn't important at all for weight loss" and you know? I still feel like it isn't important today (or at least as important as diet). If you go and eat crap all day and end up 1500 calories over -- can you really make that up in the gym -- maybe for a day or two by virtually killing yourself for 3-4 hours, but at some point you physically cannot out-do your eating..
Lets say you over-eat just 400 calories a day (which really isn't that much at all)
400 calories x 7 days in a = 2800 calories or .8 lbs gained a week or 3.2 lbs a month OR 38.4LBS IN A YEAR!!!
So lets say you want to lose weight, Okay well lets say you go the gym an average of 4 days a week for EVERY SINGLE WEEK of the entire year -- no time off, you would have to burn 700 CALORIES A EVERYDAY at the gym to BREAK EVEN.
But here is where I bring it all home (logic wise), lets say you FOCUS on diet only -- SCREW exercising... I'm going to watch what I eat period.. and instead of eating 400 calories too much, you CUT your diet by 200 calories (effectively eating 600 calories less a day than the previous example before)
200 calories x 365 DAYS = 20.85 LBS LOST WITH NO GYM.
So lets recap:
Over-eat 400 calories a day, go to the gym for AT LEAST an hour probably 1.5 hours of cardio - 4 days a week to BREAK EVEN
OR
Under-eat 200 calories a day, NEVER set foot in the gym and lose 20.85lbs in a year.
Scary stuff isn't it?
I know what you saying, DO BOTH.. Under-eat 200 calories and burn 700 calories a day 4 days a week..
(200 * 365) + (700 * 4 *52) = (73000 + 145600) / 3500 calories = 62.45 lbs in a year lost. But here is the thing -- Its not realistic for most NORMAL people.
I'm fresh out of college and I have time to make it to the gym for 1.5HRS. I don't have kids or a second job.. Heck I have time to write a Diary (ew, I know). So don't feel guilty about not destroying yourself everyday in the gym -- get yourself to the point where you under-eat by 200 calories a day and have no guilt at all --- I think its just more variable to control your diet long-term.
Lets be honest, if it really is life-long, can you really commit every year of your life to doing 4-6 hours in the gym a week. If I live to be 75 -- that's over 50 years of GYM Commitment, its stupid.. Like it or not.. Disagree with me? Fine, I hope you are kicking ass the gym when you are 74, although I haven't seen many retirees watching Matlock on the treadmill (and I go all times of the day).
So my goal still is the same it is everyday -- Get the eating under control.
This is my first official post and if you can guess it, I love numbers -- I also know at some point excel is going to get involved -- Headsup.
