When I was 14 I played hockey on the city wide all star team 5x per week. I was also captain of the football team, and played that 4-5 days a week too. I was still fat. For some of us, sports isn't enough.

Starving yourself isn't the answer. First off, you'll lose all your muscle and second you'll slow your metabolism down so your body gets fat again as soon as you eat. You do have to eat, just eat the right stuff. For me, what worked was cutting out all sugar. This means no fruit (including corn), no juice or pop, no bread, no potatoes, no rice, no pasta, no candy or deserts. Dairy is pretty bad too.

I don't believe in cutting carbs completely, but the carbs I eat come from slow release sources, so they don't spike my blood sugar and trigger fat storage. Slow release carbs are beans, steal cut oats, quinoa, veggies and such. Eat veggies and meat with every meal, a slow carb with most meals, and don't over eat. You'll cut weight.

That and working out 4 days / week lost me 70 lbs, but slowly (it took about 5 years). To make it faster, do wind sprints or some other high intensity interval training in the morning before breakfast. Losing weight isn't fun, but its not that hard once you get used to it.
