Advice on weight loss vs muscle building

Hi,

I would like to introduce myself as somewhat of a reformed slob.

In september this year I decided that my weight of 220lbs (over 15.5 stone) was a bit too heavy for a 23 year old at a height of 5 11' so I decided to go on a diet and also join my local gym.

Now just over 3 months later after dieting and going to the gym 3 times a week I weigh in at a healthier 180lbs (just under 13 stone).

Recently I changed my fitness training in the gym to focuss less on weight loss (as I previously concentrated on machines such as cross trainer and treadmill) and to move more towards muscle building (whereby I would do a 4k run on the treadmill before concentrating solely on weight machines/lifting for the rest of the session).

At the minute I am still on a strict diet in which I would eat no more than 1 meal a day (if that). I don't particularly restrict what type of food I eat during that meal apart from avoiding obvious junk food such as KFC and Burger King.

I have quite an active social life in which I maybe drink alcohol 3 nights a week (mostly beer) which obviously hasn't helped my situation - this would probably explain slower progress on weight loss than would be expected for such a regime but in all honestly I remain unrepentant over this lifestyle choice and very much intend to continue to enjoy myself.

I believe that I still have too much excess fat (my belly is a bit flabby with excess skin and while I can feel hard muscle building at the top of my arms, the underneath still very much has a bit of hanging fat.) but at the same time when I look in the mirror I pretty much like the size and shape of my body - I just need to turn the bits that wobble to hard muscle.

I was wondering has anyone got a similar experience to me and would be able to give me any advice on how to tone my wobbly bits into hard muscle. I believe that my diet doesnt help muscle building but also it is maybe still necessary to get leaner - some sort of workout or diet which balances the two would be obviously a preferred solution. Really I am wondering if spending 1 hour busting my ass on the weights is the most efficient thing I can be doing right now without the right dietary suppliments when I could be spending that time on the cross trainner getting leaner?

thanks.

You seriously need to read the nutritional stickies. It sounds like you're starving yourself which believe it or not isn't the best way to lose fat, your body will be burning muscle and retaining as much fat as it can. You've lost a lot of weight but that doesn't mean you've lost more fat than muscle

To lower your BF% you need to eat well, and that includes eating a decent amount of calories

In all honesty I take you advice and accept it's probably the best way to go forward if I was a completely disciplined person - it's just I have seen such quick results from my current regime that I don't know if I should change and also I lack a certain amount of discipline.

When it comes to not eating, I have found it rather painless. My career is putting a lot of pressure on me at the minute (but going very well) and my social calendar is packed so I have found it rather easy to not actually want to eat.

I was never an athletic person and highly doubt I have much muscle to waste away. I think the 36 inches round my belly now being 32 inches certainly wasn't all muscle.

Anyway I'll have a look through some of the stickies and see if there are particular food groups which I can switch too easily instead of my current diet (living on a small Island can restrict choice)

Really? That's what I've been telling my girlfriend :D

i'm glad you're going to read the stickies, I'm certain that changing your diet would improve your results

After reading these forums it seems the general consensus is that you can't lose fat and gain muscle at the same time.

At the minute I am 13 stone and I'm quite content with that weight. What I really want though, as mentioned before, is to replace the remaining fat wobbly bits with muscle while more or less staying the same build and weight.

So what I have gathered is that if I wish to do this I will need lose more weight (say go down to 11 stone) before then putting effort into my diet and workout to get my muscle mass to grow so that my weight rises back to 13 stone?

I am pretty much a newbie to all this but I would have expected there to be some sort of workout routine/diet for people who want to basically tone what they already have instead of building mass or losing weight?
