Aching Muscles, How to Handle Them?

Hi all,

I recently added cycling to a routine previously dominated by yoga (i have chronic low back pain which that is good for) and have been doing 1/2hr rides for a few days in a row then taking a break for a day.

The problem is that the ache in my glutes and hamstrings is intense, and despite being very flexible due to the yoga and diligently stretching out after each ride, it is not getting any better.

Can anyone offer any advice or comment?

My bet would be that the yoga moves aren't hitting the same muscles as the riding is -so you aren't stretching the muslces....

Steve has posted a lot about Self Myofascial Release with Foam Rollers - you might w ant to give that a shot...

Aaaahhh....those foam rollers are the ONLY thing that my expensive trainer ever really taught me. They are really, really great.

Agreed! They can even help loosen things up before you workout! I'm a roller user and proud!

Lots of Yoga poses. They FEEL like they are stretching the right muscles, because it aches when i stretch like that! heh...

Poses like

..and quite a few others that target the leg muscles.

Any tips for help without the aid of these roller things guys? I'm afraid i've little hope of aquiring any...

Why can't you acquire one?

They're cheap.

You can even make your own.

PVC pipe and some padding if you'd like and presto.

I'm an active recovery type of guy myself. When I get sore, which is rare anymore, I'll do a lot of very low intensity jogging, walking, dynamic mobility work, massages, stretching, etc.
