Achilles Tendon Rupture

Hi guys,

I was desperately looking for a forum that might be able to help me address my concerns and questions over a recent injury.

I was playing ball hockey a 2 weeks ago, and I went to turn quickly, and felt an awful popping in the back of my leg as though someone had struck me hard. I collapsed to the floor, and was helped back to my feet. The pain was intense when it happened, and I could not bare to take a step on my own.

A friend carried me out to his car, and took me home. I started to ice and elevate right away, and got around on crutches. The next day, the pain had reduced, and I was able to support my weight, but not walk comfortably. For the next 4 days, I took it easy, and it felt as though the range of motion increased and the pain was decreasing.

I went to my doctor, and he sent me for an ultrasound. The radiologist reported back with concerns about my Achilles. I was then sent to an Orthopedic surgeon who felt it was a partial tear, and placed me in a cast.

I have been in the cast for a week, hating every second of it. I am due to be in this cast for 10 weeks (6 weeks with the toes slanted, and 4 weeks flat).

I'm wondering if there is anything I can do to speed up my recovery, and also strengthen myself so this does not happen again.

Thank you all in advance :)

First, welcome!

Second, tough break! I broke my left leg snowboarding (yeah, I know, stupid for a 40yo man to take up snowboarding) so I know how much of a pain in the @ss crutches are.

Yes, follow the advice of your doctor and physical therapist.
