abs?

so i know that you can't target fat loss but is there a method to working you abs?

I'm confused about your question. Are you asking if there are any good exercises to train your abs? Or are you asking if there's any type of exercises that will help your abs stand out?

If you are asking the first part, then yeah, there are hundreds of ways to train your abs. If you're asking about getting your abs to show, then no. Getting your abs to show is about body fat percentage, not your workouts.

Yea, deadlifts and squats.

Cliche to say that b/c they seem to be the answer for everything.

But it's the truth. People spend too much time worrying about their abs. Certainly strong abs are critical to overall health, functionality, and appearence....

But doing a few heavy compound exercises will work the abs just as well as some crunches.

Let me ask you this....... what are you doing for your quads, hams/glutes, back and chest?

:confused:thanks for the advice and sorry if i wasn't clear I was wondering if there is a specific way to work out your abs lets way top, sides, lower, ect. sorry all this is quite new to me so i don't know the parts of the body:confused:and as for the other parts i think you are talking about my legs and to be honest I haven't started any weight trainning yet just cardio and simple exerscises like push-ups, leg lifts, squats, crunches, simple back streaches don't know the names, but since I am so over weight even these are a task sometimes.

That's kind of the point I was making though.

You are a novice. Novices have the proclivity to do things that aren't necessarily optimal; like a bunch of crunches. I'd focus more on a proper diet, cardio, and a well balanced resistance training routine focusing on compound exercises.

Compound exercises = though that call on multiple muscle groups/joints to execute, such as squats, pushups, lunges, etc.

I had completly forgotten about lunges. yeah I would like to do some resistant trainning but I don't go to the gym and since I exercise when ever possible I have to do basic exercises at home with out any machinery except my tredmill.

You don't need to go to a gym to resistance train.

Resistance = weight

Last time I checked, gravity was still working it's magic on us here on Earth, so unless you weigh nothing.... put that weight to use! :p

I do Pilaties 4 times a week. it works them well.
A friend gave me "Pilates for dummies" and I tried working out with the tape. Even though some of the exercises were very hard, none of the abdominal exercises gave me that same muscle burn that I'm used to feeling whn you are working muscles. I just went back to doing my own routine of abdominal exercises because I feel like they are working better since they hurt.

Is it possible that pilates are actually working my abs better and I just don't know it cuz they don't hurt as bad?

I don't think anyone is going to be able to answer that question. Something like crunches directly targets your abs. Many of the pilates moves do not. But that does not make on better than the other.

Also, soreness is not a good indicator for workout efficacy.
