Abdomin Problem Seeking a Solution

Well, here is my problem. I used to be self conscious about being slightly over weight so I always (all day) used to hold my stomach in slightly. I finally decided to start losing weight and get fit. I started running and eating right. I lost 20 pounds and was happy with my weight. The problem was I was still in such a habit of holding my stomach in that if I let it out it sticks out a little but is full of muscle. I want it to be flat. But no matter how much exercise I do it still will build on where its at which is sticking out.

The only solution I can think of is to not do anything and let it go to fat then burn it off but that could take years and I wouldn't be able to do anything. Does anyone have any ideas?

Well I'm not really on one anymore. I'm 17 and i weigh 134lbs and I'm 5' 7". I work 2 or 3 nights a week busing dishes and run around a lot. I skateboard or snowboard if I'm not working.

Any ideas?

no believe me I ran every other day for 3 months and didn't lose it. I have a larger stomach but I can flex the whole thing and it looks like garbage.

Heres a pic

thats just letting it hang.

I bet that you don't have much muscle there. Difficult to say from that picture but I go by your overall body appearance. Maybe you need to start on a full body workout routine with weights. I say full body because stomach crunches in isolation will not yield the results you want.

Also consider that your stomach stretches during the day because you eat and drink. Some carbs you eat may be producing gases in your intestine creating this look. What I'm trying to say is you might just be bloated.

The bloating thing would kind of make sense because sometimes when I wake up and I'm really hungry my stomach is obviously smaller. As for my diet, I didn't really have a specific diet. I tried to eat leaner meats, more greens and stuff like that. I don't ever even to this day drink soda or eat desert sugar type foods.

What kind of diet do you folks suggest to make me less bloaty?

Various foods can produce gas (beans, milk, cabbage, tomatoes, apples). You just have to work out if this is the case with you and this involves learning about your body and watching how it reacts to the foods you eat. Bloating caused by foods can be very severe (in some rare cases) or quite mild depending on a person. You stomach almost always will be slightly bigger after you've eaten.

I suspect though that Derwyddon is right and all you need is to drop body fat through a good excercise and eating regime. There are many stickies on this forum that will help you in that direction.

No, the truth is, you have too much body fat for what you want. You need to have a structured diet and a real exersize routine. "i ran everyday for a couple months" is not enough.

Loose body fat.

Scrolling through this thread, this is exactly what I was going to write. Spot on..

Except you were going to spell "Lose" correctly... I’m assuming :)

Like everyone else has said, you need to drop body fat to have a "flat" stomach. Honestly though, improving your posture will probably be required to have the look I think you're going for. Most fitness models you see in magazines with those washboard stomachs are flexing their abs to an extent... and I’m sure when they relax, they have a little roundness to their stomach. Even with 4% body fat, relaxed abs will not look like they're carved out of stone.

Nope. Loose bodyfat. That's the explanation for a non-flat stomach :D..

And around 4% bf, as long as your abs are nice and domed (well developed muscles) they will look defined almost all the time.. Given they will look better flexed, but once you get down to those numbers they look pretty great all the time.
