A Stomach Full of Fat but a Brain Filled With Dreams!

Hey guys, my name is Ricky, I'm a 20 year old male, and a first year med student. This is my first time joining a weightloss forum, I hope to lend my support to others, while receiving some as well. I've been on the heavy side most of my life. A year ago I started exercising and trying to eat healthier, I did manage to lose some weight, but some tough events in my life presented themselves and I found myself battling depression, while gaining all the weight I lost plus a bit more.

Yesterday I measured my height, and weighed myself. My measurements were:

5-11 (Without shoes)
232 lbs

It's a bit aggravating how my body distributes its weight. A lot of it is accumulated on my thighs and rear end (kind of like a lot of women) and it looks really bad on a guy. The man boobies DO NOT help at all.

My fat is very flabby, I'm like a big marshmellow. I don't know if that means it's "baby fat" as some like to call it, and it is easier to shed. Or it's just a regular excess of fat like most have.

Yesterday I began doing some positive steps. Cut out all soda, start drinking a lot more water, dump all the starch I can (white rice, white bread, etc...), and really try to keep my metabolism going by *TRYING* to eat small meals, while throwing in some healthy snacks here and there.

I live on my own, but I just really don't know which are the foods I should eat, and how much of them. I am so lost as far as nutrition goes, I don't know where to even get a hold of it. Im eating whole wheat bread, this morning I had 3 eggs, (2 of them didn't have the yolk). I'll try to implement some sort of cardio exercise by waking up early before I go to school and do some running for 40-60 minutes.

I know you guys have plenty of stickies I've looked through a lot of them, which had great information, you guys are amazing. But still couldn't really pull enough from them to make some sort of plan. Sorry for being so lost.

I have a few questions:

What type of snacks are best when losing weight? I eat lots of grapes, prunes, peanuts, and make lots of fresh strawberry juice with no sugar. I also love peanut butter, and might over indulge a bit on it.

What type of diet regimen would be best for me? Should I buy measuring cups? Count calories? How often should I eat?

Hey there I also just started dieting also I'm 5'11 206. Im in the same boat as you are, I'm gonna try and cut out all sodas and increase my water intake. Whatever you do don't starve yourself I started eating 6 small meals a day and I never feel hungy. For breakfast I will usually have oatmeal, a healthy cereal or egg beaters with turky bacon. And lunch I usually make a nice salad and dinner I might have fish, chicken a lean cuisine or something with a sweat potato or some other vegetable.

I find the best cardio to be interval cardio.

Hey cullinaa! Thanks a lot for the response. After reading your post I immediately felt like I wasn't alone in this.

Are you going to start a diary on the site? Been thinking of starting mine on Monday.

I had that same problem with eating and drinking all the wrong foods. Some good snacks that I like to eat are granola bars, trail mix and fresh fruit. Cullinaa is right about never starving yourself.

Rickey try to eat just enough to keep yourself going. Eat to give yourself energy so to speak. When you eat this way you will find yourself eating way...less. Try to make good healthy choices every day because this will add over time and you will see results.

Thanks for the response Patrick. Will definitely be trying to implement new healthy snacks into my diet. I bought some dried Almonds yesterday, excited to try them out.

"Eat just enough to get yourself going" I'll remember those words!
