A Squat Question...

So today I was discussing this in the gym with a friend and we really couldn't come up with the answer, so maybe some one here can help.

When doing split squats, both standard and with his back foot elevated, he noticed that is knee would move medially when loading onto his leg. After we checked out is form etc at a low weight and just body weight nothing seemed to look worng to me or feel wrong to him, but the knee still shifted towards his midline.

We couldn't decide if it still was something he was doing wrong, if it was a muscle imbalance, or that physically is just the way his knee moves.

Any thoughts on, or experiences with somthing like this?

Thanks.

Canuck, I posted this at my main site, here's the reponses so far:

But it aapears your friend may need to start doing some bird dogs and lateral/side/traveling lunges.

In addition, you may want to register and pose your issue to Bill Hartman. He knows his stuff like no one else.

Here's a decent link to a description of the subtalar joint:

Here's another for hip and pelvis work:

I'll also add, I've have several major players recommend a flat sole shoe, such as Chuck Taylor All-Stars by Converse.
