a slew of exercise (mostly) questions

Yay, thanks Steve! All this has been most helpful.
I'll be going to the gym tomorrow and giving my muscles something to complain about. I currently go MWF, and alternate between upper body and lower body strength training, but I include abs in every workout. Thats after 35-45 mins on a treadmill or recumbent bike. I'm working my way up to using the elliptical again but they always seem to kick my butt. Literally.

I'm not trying to increase strength for any reason except health and weight loss. So is it ok that I'm alternating upper and lower body?

Thanks again!

I'd move the cardio to after your weight workout.

If I were training 3 days per week, I'd do something like this:

Day 1:

Squats - 3 sets of 5 reps all with the same weight
Bench - 3 sets of 5 reps all with the same weight
BB Row - 3 sets of 5 reps all with the same weight
Any accessory work you want to throw in at the end.... just don't overkill it.... things like abs and tris, etc.

Day 2:

Squat - 3x8 using about a 20% lighter load than Day 1
Pull-ups or Pulldowns - 3x5
Standing Overhead Press - 3x5
Romanian Deadlift 3x5

Day 3:

Squats - 5x5 pyramiding your way up so that your last set is heavier than your working set from Day 1
Bench 3x5
BB or Cable Row - 3x5
Accessory work

Something like this.... nothing written in stone and you can tweak it to your needs... but this is very conducive to maintaining strength and muscle while dieiting.

Of course, good form is always in order.... so if you don't know these exercises..... learn them before doing any serious weight!

Hello, everyone. Great forum! I hope you do not find my question stupid, and I would greatly appreciate an answer:

Do you think that the rate ( speed) of weight-loss is increased when you combine a lower calorie intake and exercise, and if so, by how much would you estimate it? Thanks in advance, J

Steve, I'm unaware of the bench presses affect on the Abdominals. Was this a typo?

Just stopping in.... early in tonight while on honeymoon as I have some sleep to catch up on.

Anyhoo, T - core as in main, primary, required, etc.

Not core as in abs.... LOL.

Or was your question a joke?
